LAST WEEKEND
•SMSU opened its 2022-23 season on Friday night in the Nebraska-Kearney Classic, falling to Northwest Missouri State 95-86.
•The Mustangs ended the night shooting 50.9 percent (29-of-57), the first time shooting over 50 percent since 2019, and 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from behind the arc. The Mustangs had four in double figures, with Jenna Borchers leading the way, scoring a game-high 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting, grabbing four rebounds and dishing a team-high four assists. Madison Gehloff tied a career-high with 20 points with six rebounds, Bri Stoltzman tallied a career-best 19 points with six rebounds, and Hannah Parsley reached career-highs in points (16), and rebounds (8).
•Both teams would get to the free throw line, with the Bearcats shooting 84.6 percent (22-of-26), and the Mustangs shooting 77.8 percent (21-of-27). The difference was bench scoring and the turnover battle, with NWMSU outscoring the SMSU bench 28-4, and forced 16 turnovers while only turning it over six times. The Bearcats also rode a 9-0 run in the final 1:46 of the third quarter, which proved to be the separator.
•The Mustangs closed out the Nebraska-Kearney Classic on Saturday afternoon, falling to Nebraska-Kearney 67-57.
•SMSU led by nine at 36-27 with 8:38 left in the third quarter, but the Lopers outscored the Mustangs 40-21 the rest of the way, going 15 of 28 from the field and limiting SMSU to 8 of 26 during the stretch.
•Sam Wall and Parsley each scored 11 points to lead the Mustangs, with Parsley adding six rebounds. Stoltzman scored 10 points on 3 of 5 shooting, going 2 of 2 from deep and recording six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Borchers finished the night tying for a team-high with three rebounds and added nine points, and Maddie Thorfinnson had a pair of steals to go along with two points and three rebounds off the bench.
FAST BREAK
•The Mustangs finished 10-3 at home last season, their best home win percentage since the 2002-03 season.
•Jenna Borchers sunk four threes over the weekend, moving her to 189 career three-pointers made, six behind Sadie Stelter for most in program history.
•SMSU returns eight letter winners from last season's 13-13 team that placed fifth in the NSIC South and finished eighth overall with a 9-11 league mark.
•SMSU also earned its first home NSIC tournament game since 2005, and first NSIC tournament victory since 2003, ending the season with their first ever tournament game inside the Pentagon.
•The Mustangs return just one starter from a season ago in Borchers, who started all 26 games last season, averaging 7.5 ppg and 3.3 rpg while finishing second on the team with 53 assists.
•Madison Gehloff played in all 26 games and started three last season, shooting 45.6 percent (41 of 90) from the field, averaged 4.0 points per game and grabbed 3.7 rebounds.
•Sam Wall is also back after playing all 26 games and starting one, leading all returners with 7.7 points per game and 46 made 3-pointers, making them at a 39.7 percent clip.
•Sophomore guard Hannah Parsley saw action in all 26 games last season, averaging 3.7 points per game off the bench.
•Also coming off the bench in all 26 games was sophomore guard Bri Stoltzman, who averaged 2.6 points on 51.9 percent shooting from the field.
•Sophomores Kenzie Jones, Peyton Blandin, and Sarah Conlon also return after seeing limited time last season.
•The Mustang roster also features redshirt freshman forward Emily Kranz and four freshmen in guard Zoie Centers, forwards Maddie Thorfinnson and Audrey Swanson, and center Kennadi Buchholz.
SMSU HEAD COACH TOM WEBB
•Tom Webb is in his seventh season as head coach with a 58-93 record, including 43-77 in NSIC play.
•Webb is 150-216 overall in his 15th season as head coach at the Division II level after compiling a record of 92-123 in eight seasons (2008-16) as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.).
•SMSU earned their first win over a ranked team since 2018-19 in 2021-22, defeating No. 15-ranked Nebraska-Kearney.
•Webb guided the Mustangs to a 10-3 home record, their best home record since the 2002-03 season and led SMSU to its first home NSIC tournament game since 2005, and first NSIC tournament victory since 2003, ending the season with their first ever tournament game inside the Pentagon.
•SMSU's .643 win percentage in 2020-21 was the program's best since their .655 percentage in the 2004-05 season.
•Webb recorded his 100th career Division II win against Wisconsin-Parkside (91-83) on Nov. 16, 2018.

CROWN COLLEGE SERIES HISTORY
•SMSU and Crown College will meet for just the second time.
•The lone meeting came on Nov. 11, 2013.
•SMSU claimed a 101-44 victory in the game, the last time the Mustangs have scored 100 points in a game.
