Mustangs continues homestand against Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan

    THE LOOK AHEAD

•The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team finishes out a three-game home week with a Thursday match-up against Michigan Tech at 6 p.m., before a Saturday afternoon showdown with Northern Michigan at 2 p.m.

•The games will be streamed on the NSIC Network.

•The games will be broadcast on 105.1 FM KARL with Ryan Rohlik.

     LAST TIME OUT

•SMSU opened its home season on Tuesday night with a 97-31 victory over Crown College.

•The Mustangs had six players score in double figures with Sam Wall leading the way with 18 points on 6 of 8 shooting with four 3-pointers. Jenna Borchers scored 13 points on 4 of 8 shooting with three 3-pointers, while Peyton Blandin added 12 points making 5 of 7 shots with a pair of 3-pointers. Kennadi Buchholz recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Madison Gehloff and Hannah Parsley each chipped in with 10 points.

•The Mustangs finished the game shooting 57 percent (35 of 61) from the field including 10 of 22 from 3-point range.

Bri Stoltzman also had a solid game for the Mustangs with seven points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

•SMSU would continue its red-hot shooting in the second half making 17 of 26 field goals with five 3-pointers.  

    FAST BREAK

•The Mustangs is 1-0 at home after finishing 10-3 at home last season, their best home win percentage since the 2002-03 season.

Jenna Borchers sunk three three-pointers over the weekend, moving her into second place with 192 career three-pointers made, seven behind Sadie Stelter for most in program history. 

•The Mustangs have shot over 50 percent in two of their three games this season, ranking 20th in the nation and first in the NSIC with a 49.1 field goal percentage on the season.

•SMSU has also shot 41.4 percent from behind the arc, leading the conference and ranking 28th in the country. 

•SMSU returns eight letter winners from last season.

•SMSU was tabbed 12th overall and sixth in the South Division in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll

Borchers is leading the Mustangs in scoring with 14.3 ppg, and is tied for the team lead with eight assists.

•All five Mustang starters are averaging double figures in scoring, with Madison Gehloff (12.7), Hannah Parsley (12.3), Bri Stoltzman (12.0), and Sam Wall (11.7), all shooting at least 46 percent from the field.  

•Wall and Borchers are tied with a team-high seven three pointers made, with Wall shooting a scorching 63.6 percent. 

•Parsley leads SMSU in rebounding with 6.0 rpg.

•Stoltzman is leading the team with eight assists and six steals, also chipping in 5.3 rpg. 

•SMSU is averaging 80.0 ppg while opponents are averaging 64.3 ppg. SMSU has a plus-7.3 rebounding margin.

•SMSU is shooting 49.1 percent from the field, 41.4 percent from the 3-point line, and 72.1 percent the free-throw line.

    SMSU HEAD COACH TOM WEBB

Tom Webb is in his seventh season as head coach with a 59-93 record, including 43-77 in NSIC play. 

•Webb is 151-216 overall in his 15th season as head coach at the Division II level after compiling a record of 92-123 in eight seasons (2008-16) as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.). 

•SMSU earned their first win over a ranked team since 2018-19 in 2021-22, defeating No. 15-ranked Nebraska-Kearney. 

•Webb guided the Mustangs to a 10-3 home record, their best home record since the 2002-03 season and led SMSU to its first home NSIC tournament game since 2005, and first NSIC tournament victory since 2003, ending the season with their first ever tournament game inside the Pentagon.

•SMSU's .643 win percentage in 2020-21 was the program's best since their .655 percentage in the 2004-05 season.  

•Webb recorded his 100th career Division II win against Wisconsin-Parkside (91-83) on Nov. 16, 2018.

    MICHIGAN TECH SERIES HISTORY

•SMSU and Michigan Tech will meet for the fourth time, with the Huskies winning all three match-ups.

•The first meeting came in 1988, and they met most recently in 2010.

•This will be the first time Michigan Tech plays in Marshall. 

•It will also be the first time Tom Webb has faced the Huskies.

    NORTHERN MICHIGAN SERIES HISTORY

•SMSU and Northern Michigan will meet for the fourth time, with the Wildcats winning all three match-ups.

•The first meeting came in 1987, and they met most recently in 2010.

•The lone match-up in Marshall came in 1987, when the Wildcats won 96-84, but was later announced as a forfeit win for the Mustangs. 

•It will also be the first time Tom Webb has faced the NMU.

MICHIGAN TECH NOTES

•Michigan Tech is 3-0 on the season after defeating William Jewell, Lewis, and Concordia-St. Paul. 

•The Huskies were picked to finish third in the GLIAC Preseason Poll

Ellie Mackay was named first-team all-conference and Alex Rondorf was second-team all-conference and all-GLIAC defensive team. Isabella Lenz also earned GLIAC freshman of the year honors.

•Michigan Tech is shooting 41 percent from the field, 33 percent from 3-point range, and 89 percent from the free throw line.

•The Huskies average 74 points per game, while opponents averaged 56.3 points per game.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN NOTES  

2022-23 Record: 2-0, 0-0

Head Coach: Casey Thousand, 1st season, 2-0 at NMU

Mascot: Wildcats

•Northern Michigan is 2-0 on the season after defeating Lewis and William Jewell, and will play Minnesota Crookston on Thursday. 

•The Wildcats were picked to finish seventh in the GLIAC Preseason Poll

Makaylee Kuhn was named to the GLIAC Preseason First Team after earning All-GLIAC first-team honors the previous two seasons. 

•Northern Michigan is shooting 44 percent from the field, 49 percent from 3-point range, and 62 percent from the free throw line.

•The Wildcats average 73.5 points per game, while opponents averaged 55 points per game.
