Stoltzman, Parsley power Mustangs past the Huskies

MARSHALL, Minn. - Bri Stoltzman had a career-night, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds en route to her first career double-double, and Hannah Parsley added a career-high 18 points as the Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team earned an impressive home victory, defeating Michigan Tech 81-69 on Thursday afternoon inside the R/A Facility. 

The Mustangs, now 2-2 on the season, had four in double figures, with Madison Gehloff and Sam Wall scoring 11 points apiece. Stoltzman led the way with a career-best five assists as well, with Parsley adding three and Jenna Borchers, Payton Blandin, and Audrey Swanson each dishing a pair of assists. Parsley finished the game with six rebounds, while Borchers grabbed four and Gehloff added three.  

The Mustangs finished the game shooting 43.5 percent (30 of 69), and won the game on the defensive end, forcing 17 turnovers while only giving it away eight times, and outscored the Huskies 19-9 off turnovers and 21-8 on the fast break.  

 
MTU, who moves to 3-1 on the season, was led by Alex Rondorf's 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Huskies held a 45-36 advantage on the glass, but could not gain an advantage inside, getting outscored 44-34 in the paint. 
 

The Huskies raced to a 12-4 advantage early, shooting 5 of 6 from the field and holding the Mustangs to 2 of 9 shooting, 0 of 3 from behind the arc and 0 of 3 from the free throw line with 5:39 to go in the first quarter. 


Following a timeout, The Mustangs found their stride, shooting 5 of 10 and making three three-pointers, going on a 14-7 run that would be capped by a buzzer-beating three from Audrey Swanson to trail 19-18 into the second quarter.  

With the score tied at 22-22, the Mustangs galloped to a 6-0 run and a 28-22 lead behind four Stoltzman points and a Gehloff layup. 

MTU answered with a 5-0 run to cut the Mustang lead to one, but a 7-0 counter by SMSU grew the lead to eight at 35-27. The Huskies clawed back, capping an 11-2 run with a three-pointer to cut the SMSU lead back to one, but Wall would hit a jumper to beat the buzzer and hand the Mustangs a 39-36 lead into the locker room.  

Five points from Wall and a Parsley three-pointer opened the second half and put the Mustangs up 47-36 just a minute and 15 seconds into the half. After a pair of MTU free-throws, SMSU scored the next five points, giving them their largest lead at 52-38 with 6:30 to go in the third quarter.  

The Huskies cut their deficit to 10 with 20 seconds to play in the quarter, but a Stoltzman jumper just inside the free throw line with three seconds left pushed the Mustangs to a 63-51 lead into the final frame.  

MTU opened the fouth quarter scoring eight of the first 11 points to trail 66-59 before a pair of Parsley free throws gave her a new career-high and put the lead back to nine at 68-59.  

The Huskies kept creeping closer, trailing 70-65 with just under a minute remaining, but a pair of Stoltzman free throws extended the lead to three possessions and put the game away.  

The Mustangs conclude a three-game week hosting Northern Michigan at 2 p.m., inside the R/A Facility on Saturday.
