FAYETTE, Iowa – The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team drilled 11 3-pointers with the Mustangs'
Jenna Borchers scoring a team-high 17 points with five 3-pointers to cruise to an 83-47 victory over Upper Iowa University in NSIC action inside Dorman Gym on Saturday afternoon.
SMSU improves to 7-3 overall, 4-1 NSIC, in earning its second straight victory, while UIU drops its sixth straight game is now 4-6 overall, 0-5 NSIC.
Hannah Parsley scored 13 points on 6 of 12 shooting to help the SMSU cause, while teammate
Bri Stoltzman added 11 points, while making 5 of 8 field goals.
Borchers, who made 6 of 12 field goal attempts, also added seven rebounds, four assists and one steal.
SMSU used a balanced scoring attack with
Madison Gehloff,
Sam Wall,
Peyton Blandin and
Maddie Thorfinnson each scoring seven points, while
Audrey Swanson chipped in with five points.
The Mustangs finished the game shooting 44 percent (32 of 73) from the field, including 11 of 30 from 3-point range. SMSU was just 4 of 18 from the field, including 0 of 6 from long range in the final quarter, but the Mustangs had put the game away in building a 72-35 lead after three quarters.
The Peacocks were held to 33 percent (18 of 54) shooting and made just 1 of 12 3-point field goals. Lydia Haack paced UIU with a game-high 21 points on 7 of 12 shooting while grabbing six rebounds.
SMSU started the game red-hot from long-range connecting on 4 of its first 6 3-point attempts in the opening five minutes to build an 18-8 advantage. The Mustangs would close the quarter drilling five 3-pointers to take a 28-15 lead after 10 minutes.
SMSU maintained a 30-17 lead early in the second quarter before a Wall layup sparked a 7-0 run capped by a Parsley layup to extend the margin to 39-17 midway through the quarter.
Gehloff would hit a field goal with 3:23 remaining in the half to give the Mustangs a 46-22 lead before the Peacocks closed the half on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 46-27 at halftime.
SMSU made seven 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes while shooting 47 percent.
UIU scored the first field goal of the second half, but SMSU answered with an 11-2 run with Borchers scoring five points, to build a 57-31 lead.
SMSU never looked back in shooting 59 percent in the third quarter with four 3-pointers, while limiting UIU to 27 percent shooting for the second straight quarter.
SMSU returns home next weekend for its final home games prior to the Christmas break facing Concordia-St. Paul on Friday, Dec. 16, with game time set for 5:30 p.m. The Mustangs will then close the weekend on Saturday, Dec. 17, taking on Minnesota State.
