Mustangs set to host CSP and MSU

    THE LOOK AHEAD

•The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team returns home, welcoming Concordia-St. Paul at 5:30 p.m., on Friday before hosting No. 4-ranked Minnesota State at 3:30 p.m., on Saturday.

    BROADCAST INFO 

• The games will be streamed on the NSIC Network.

• Friday will be broadcast on 105.1 FM KARL with Ryan Rohlik.

     LAST TIME OUT

• The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team snapped an 11-game road losing streak in a resilient 66-59 victory over the Winona State Warriors on Friday night at the McCown Gymnasium in Winona.

• It was SMSU's first victory at Winona since Jan. 15, 2005, and its first road win since Nov. 23, 2021, at Sioux Falls.

Sam Wall led all scorers, scoring 17 points on 5 of 10 shooting from the field and 3 of 7 from beyond the arc. Hannah Parsley was solid again for the Mustangs, scoring 15 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the field, adding five rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Bri Stoltzman scored 11 points and Peyton Blandin scored nine points, with each grabbing four rebounds in the process. Madison Gehloff led the Mustangs with seven rebounds and scored eight points.

The Mustangs drilled 11 3-pointers with the Jenna Borchers scoring a team-high 17 points with five 3-pointers to cruise to an 83-47 victory over Upper Iowa University in NSIC action inside Dorman Gym on Saturday afternoon.

•Parsley scored 13 points on 6 of 12 shooting to help the SMSU cause, while Stoltzman added 11 points, while making 5 of 8 field goals.

• Borchers, who made 6 of 12 field goal attempts, also added seven rebounds, four assists and one steal.

    FAST BREAK

• The Mustangs made their first appearance in the D2SIDA Central Region ranking, slotting in at No. 10.

•SMSU is one of four NSIC teams to be ranked this week, with Minnesota State (No. 2), Minnesota Duluth (No. 4), and Augustana (No. 8) each finding a spot in the ranking. 

• The Mustangs are 5-0 at home after finishing 10-3 at home last season, their best home win percentage since the 2002-03 season.

• SMSU snapped an 11 game road losing streak last weekend, earning its first ever Winona/Fayette sweep. 

Jenna Borchers holds the program record for career three-pointers made with 206 makes after breaking the previous record of 199 on Dec. 1. 

• Borchers also became the 23rd member of the 1,000 point club on Saturday, Nov. 19 against Northern Michigan. 

• The Mustangs have shot at least 50 percent in four of their 10 games this season, ranking 16th in the nation with a 46.2 field goal percentage and 31st with a 36.3 percentage from three-point range on the season.

• SMSU has touted a high-octane offense, ranking 22nd in the nation scoring 79.4 points per game, and have turned it over just 13.8 times per game, the 38th fewest total in DII.

• SMSU returns eight letter winners from last season.

• SMSU was tabbed 12th overall and sixth in the South Division in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Hannah Parsley leads SMSU in scoring with 14.2 ppg, adding 5.4 rpg, 21 steals, 17 assists, and six blocks. 

Bri Stoltzman leads the Mustangs with a 57.0 field goal percentage, 6.4 rpg and 28 assists, and is second with 18 steals and 13.4 ppg. 

• Borchers is third on the team  with 12.6 ppg and second on the team with 25 assists. 

Sam Wall (11.6),  and Madison Gehloff (9.1) are both adding offensively, with both shooting at least 44 percent from the field.  

•Wall and Borchers have each made 21 three-pointers, with Wall shooting 41.2 percent from deep. 

•SMSU is averaging 78.4 ppg while opponents are averaging 63.3 ppg. SMSU has a plus-4.5 rebounding margin.

•SMSU is shooting 46.2 percent from the field, 36.3 percent from the 3-point line, and 73.3 percent the free-throw line.

    SMSU HEAD COACH TOM?WEBB

Tom Webb is in his seventh season as head coach with a 65-94 record, including 47-78 in NSIC play. 

• Webb is 156-217 overall in his 15th season as?head coach at the Division II level after compiling a record of 92-123 in eight seasons (2008-16) as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.). 

• SMSU earned their first win over a ranked team since 2018-19 in 2021-22, defeating No. 15-ranked Nebraska-Kearney. 

• Webb guided the Mustangs to a 10-3 home record, their best home record since the 2002-03 season and led SMSU to its first home NSIC tournament game since 2005, and first NSIC tournament victory since 2003, ending the season with their first ever tournament game inside the Pentagon.

• Webb recorded his 100th career Division II?win against Wisconsin-Parkside (91-83) on Nov. 16, 2018.

    CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL SERIES HISTORY

• SMSU and Concordia-St. Paul will meet for the 63rd time with the Golden Bears holding a 44-18 edge in a series that started in 1974.

• The teams split a pair of games last season, which each team winning at home.

• CSP won 67-65 on a buzzer beater on Dec. 17, 2021, and SMSU won a 94-85 double OT thriller on Feb. 5.

• SMSU is 10-18 at home in the series all-time. 

• The teams have split the last four meetings. 

• The Mustangs have won two of the last three meetings in Marshall

• SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 2-10 all-time versus the Golden Bears.

    MINNESOTA STATE SERIES HISTORY

• SMSU and Minnesota State will meet for the 78th time with the Mavericks owning a 45-22 advantage in a series that started in 1970.

• Each team won its home game last season, with MSU winning 96-74 on Dec. 18, 2021 before a 63-46 SMSU win on Feb. 4.

• The teams met in the NSIC Quarterfinals, with the Mavericks earning an 89-65 win. 

• SMSU is 12-16 all-time in Marshall against MSU.

• SMSU has won the last three meetings in Marshall

• SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 6-8 all-time versus Minnesota State, including 5-4 in the last nine match-ups.

• CSP is 2-3 in the NSIC on the season after dropping a pair of home games to Wayne State and Augustana last weekend. 

• The Golden Bears were picked to finish fifth in the NSIC and fourth in the NSIC South in the NSIC Preseason Poll

Ally Gietzel is leading the team with 10.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.

Sarah Kuma ranks second on the team with 10.3 points per game, leading CSP with 21 steals and 18 assists.

Lindsey Becher was an All-NSIC First Team member a season ago and is fourth in the country with 2.56 blocks per game.

• The Golden Bears are shooting 37.8 percent from the field, 30.6 percent from 3-point range, and 67.3 percent from the free throw line.

•CSP average 63.3 points per game, while opponents average 61.9 points per game.

    MINNESOTA STATE NOTES

• The Mavericks are ranked No. 4 in the latest WBCA Poll.

• MSU is 5-0 in the NSIC on the season after defeating Augustana and Wayne State at home. 

• The Mavericks were picked to finish first in the NSIC and the NSIC South in the NSIC Preseason Poll.

Joey Batt is the reigning NSIC South Player of the Week and leads MSU with 17.2 ppg on 50.9 percent shooting,  30 assists, and 29 steals.

Natalie Bremer averages 14.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, and Destinee Bursch adds 14 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 25 assists, and 20 steals.

• Minnesota State is shooting 44.0 percent from the field, 29.3 percent from 3-point range, and 72.0 percent from the free throw line.

• The Mavericks average 85.6 points per game, while opponents average 59.3 points per game.
