CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team concluded an impressive two days at the University of Illinois Tournament earning a pair of victories on Saturday to finish the tournament with a 3-0 record.
SMSU, 6-9 overall, opened play on Saturday with a 72-41 victory over City University of New York before cruising to a 70-47 win over Illinois.
In the win over CUNY,
Walter Johnson paced the Mustangs with 24 points on 11 of 15 from the field with one 3-pointer.
Emmanuel Fuentes Cervantes added 15 points with
Kendrick Newton chipping in with six points.
The Mustangs shot 58 percent (29 of 50) from the field in the victory over CUNY.
In the final game on Saturday, Johnson scored a game-high 26 points with Fuentes Cervantes pouring in 22 points on 9 of 11 shooting. Johnson closed the game making 12 of 13 from the free throw line.
Nicholas Herrington had a strong game with 10 points with
Genaro Perez adding six points.
Southwest Minnesota State concludes the regular season on Feb. 25-26 with four games at the University of Arizona Tournament.
