CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team returned to the win column on Friday with a big 71-61 victory over Wisconsin-Whitewater at the University of Illinois Tournament.
Walter Johnson and
Emmanuel Fuentes Cervantes combined to have big games for the Mustangs, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Johnson made 15 of 23 field goals for a team-high 34 points, while Fuentes Cervantes scored 21 points on 9 of 16 shooting.
Genaro Perez and
Nicholas Herrington each scored eight points to help the Mustang attack. It was SMSU's first victory over UWW since 2016, snapping a 15-game losing streak.
SMSU, 4-9 overall, finished the game shooting 57 percent (32 of 56) from the field.
The Mustangs return to the court on Saturday with games versus CUNY at 8 a.m. and Illinois starting at 12 p.m.
