SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs womens basketball team would be outscored 22-11 in the fourth quarter, leading to a 74-64 loss at the hands of Augustana in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon inside the Sanford Pentagon.
The Mustangs ended the night shooting 36.8 percent (21 of 57), but would commit 23 turnovers, including 10 in the first quarter to suffer their ninth consecutive road loss. Augie shot 39.4 percent (26 of 66) from the field and just 21.7 percent (5 of 23) from behind the arc, but would outscore SMSU 18-7 off of turnovers.
SMSU would have a pair of players in double figures, with
Meleah Reinhart (15) and
Sadie Stelter (14) leading the team in scoring. Stelter would finish with a team-high seven rebounds, and would break the program-record for made three-pointers in a career, with
Madison Gehloff (6) and
Abuk Akoi (5) each recording at least five rebounds. Akoi would also lead the way defensively, nabbing two steals and recording two blocked shots.
Augie was lead by Aislinn Duffy, who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the way.
Reinhart would open the game with a pair of buckets in the first 1:12 to take a 4-0 lead. Stelter would score her first bucket of the game following an Augie three to take a 6-3 lead at the 8:24 mark.
The Mustangs would go scoreless for the next five minutes, with Augie racing to a 9-0 run to take a 12-6 lead.
After a Stelter three to break the cold streak and tie the program record for career three-pointers, Augie would score five straight points to grow their lead to 17-9.
SMSU would score the next three points to cut the lead to 17-12, but Augie would close the quarter with the final four points to lead 21-12 into the second quarter.
SMSU would shoot 45.5 percent from the field in the quarter and outrebound Augie 10-7 but would be plagued by 10 turnovers and would be outscored 8-0 off turnovers to allow Augie the early separation.
Augie continued their run early in the second quarter, scoring 10 of the first 14 points to grow their lead to a game-high 15 points at 31-16 with 6:52 to go in the first half.
Lily Schoknecht would put an end to the run, hitting her fourth three of the season at the 6:38 mark to ignite the Mustangs, leading to a 15-1 run capped by a Schoknecht layup to bring SMSU within one at 32-31 with 2:15 to go in the half.
After each team would trade a pair of points, Augie would close the half strong, scoring the final four points in a minute and 12 seconds to take a 38-33 lead into the locker room.
Stelter would lead the Mustangs in the first half, scoring seven points and adding five rebounds.
The Vikings' run would bleed into the third quarter, scoring the first five points of the quarter to grow their lead to double digits at 43-33. Reinhart would score the next five points to cut the Augie lead back to five at 43-38.
After a jumper from Augie to grow their lead to 45-38, The Mustangs would go on an 8-0 run, capped by Stelter's program-record 191
st three-pointer to take a 46-45 lead with 3:40 to go in the third.
After four straight Augie points to to take a three-point lead, Borchers would knot the game up at 49-49 with a make from deep at the 2:16 mark.
With Augie holding a 52-51 lead inside for 10 seconds left in the quarter, Reinhart would step to the foul line and make a pair to give the Mustangs a 53-52 lead into the fourth quarter.
After each team would score a pair of points, Augie would go on a 12-3 run to take a 66-58 lead with 2:56 to go.
The Vikings would score eight of the final 14 points to bring the game to its final score.
SMSU will host a tournament game for the first time since 2005, welcoming MSU Moorhead to the R/A Facility on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
