OWATONNA, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team bounced back from its first conference loss with an early Sunday morning 6-1 victory over the University of Sioux Falls inside the West Hills Tennis & Fitness Club.
SMSU, which lost to Augustana on Saturday, improves to 9-2 overall, 3-1 NSIC, while USF drops to 3-2 overall, 2-2 NSIC. SMSU has now defeated USF the past two season after losing nine straight in the series from 2010-20.
The Mustangs earned the doubles point on Sunday with
Courtenay Leonard and
Kristina Vuksanovic winning 7-5 at No. 1 and
Cora Delich and
Roz Oye winning 6-2 at No. 3.
Joana Reis Indio picked up a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs with Leonard also winning in straight sets at No. 2 by scores of 6-4, 6-2.
USF would earn a point with a victory at No. 3 singles, but SMSU would earn points at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles. Vuksanovic picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3, Delich won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 5, while
Daniela Poulakidas won at No. 6 by scores of 6-3, 6-1.
SMSU continues NSIC play on Friday, Feb. 25, with a 6 p.m. match versus Winona State and on Saturday, Feb. 26, with a 1 p.m. match versus Upper Iowa. Both matches will be played inside the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minn.
