Huskies sweep Mustangs on Friday night

BRANDON, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University baseball dropped both ends of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader to St. Cloud State on Friday night as Aspen Park. SCSU pulled away to earn a 7-1 victory in game one and then held SMSU to one hit in game two to earn a 12-0 win.
 
The two teams conclude the series on Saturday with a single game starting at 5 p.m. The series, originally scheduled to be played in St. Cloud, but was relocated to Brandon due to poor weather and field conditions.
 
SCSU has won seven straight and 13 of its last 14 while improving to 22-10 overall, 14-4 NSIC. SMSU drops to 8-20 overall, 1-15 NSIC.
 
In game one, SCSU scored a pair of runs in the first inning to build an early 2-0 lead. SMSU cut the deficit in half in the top of the second with a two-out rally. Max Kalenberg walked with two outs, moved to third on a double by Robbie Smith and eventually scored on a passed ball.
 
SMSU had a great chance to tie or take the lead in the fourth as Jaxon Haase and Isaac Nett singled, while Kalenberg walked to load the bases with one out. The Mustangs however failed to score following back-to-back strikeouts.
 
The Huskies put the game away with a pair of runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to seal the win.
 
SMSU closed the game with five hits with Nick Brown, Keenan Wenzel, Haase, Nett and Smith each collecting one hit.
 
Ryan Chmielewski (2-5) suffered the loss tossing 5 2/3 innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
 
In game two, three SCSU pitchers limited SMSU to just one hit, while recording nine strikeouts. Kalenberg picked up the lone hit for the Mustangs leading off the fifth inning, while Wenzel recorded a pair of walks.
 
SCSU snapped a scoreless game in the third with four runs, added four more in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
 
Kolby Kiser (0-6) started for the Mustangs and lasted 2 2/3 innings allowing four runs on five hits.
