SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 3 seed Southwest Minnesota State University women's tennis team had its season come to an end on Saturday suffering a 4-2 defeat to No. 2 seed Winona State University in the semifinals of the NSIC Tournament at Huether Match Pointe.
SMSU, which set a program single season win record at the Division II level, ends its season at 17-11 overall. It's the second straight season SMSU has advanced to the semifinals of the tournament.
WSU won the doubles point earning a 6-4 win at No. 1 and a 6-0 victory at No. 2. SMSU's No. 3 doubles team of
Roz Oye and
Cora Delich led their match 5-4, but the match was not finished following WSU's two wins.
It was a battle in singles play as SMSU's two seniors,
Kristina Vuksanovic and
Cora Delich each won matches. Vuksanovic earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3, while Delich carded a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
Joana Reis Indio lost 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1, while
Courtenay Leonard battled at No. 2 before losing 7-5, 6-4. In another close match,
Maja Louisa Harck dropped a hard-fought three-set match at No. 4, while
Faith Madikwe split the first two sets at No. 6, but the match wasn't completed due as WSU secured the decisive fourth team point at No. 4 singles.
WSU will face Augustana in the championship match on Sunday.
