Haase walk-off single lifts SMSU to sweep over UMary

MARSHALL, Minn. – Sophomore Jaxon Haas lined a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to score Robbie Smith for the game-winning run and lift Southwest Minnesota State to a dramatic come-from-behind 8-7 victory in game two and complete a sweep over the University of Mary on Wednesday at Legion Field.

SMSU trailed 7-4 in the ninth inning before scoring three runs to tie the game and setting up the 10th inning heroics and give the Mustangs their second walk-off victory in three games. SMSU has also won four of its last five games to improve to 12-24 overall, 5-19 NSIC.

UMary, which entered the day seventh in the league standings, dropped to 19-22 overall, 11-15 NSIC.

In the opener, freshman Owen Latendresse tossed 5 1/3 innings with a career-high eight strikeouts, while Max Kalenberg and Keenen Wenzel hit home runs in the fifth inning to lift the Mustangs to a 5-2 victory.

Latendresse (2-2) was dominate throughout most of his outing, allowing just four hits and two runs, while walking three. Craig Lasley recorded his first career save entering the seventh inning with no outs and the tying run at the plate, but he coaxed a 5-4-3 double play and a fly out to seal the victory.

The game was tied at 2-2 in the fifth before Kalenberg smashed a solo homer to put SMSU back in front. Wenzel would later blast a 2-run shot to extend the lead to 5-2.

SMSU jumped on the board early to take a two-run lead in the first inning. Robbie Smith started the rally with a hit by pitch and later advanced to third on a one-out single by Isaac Nett. Jaxon Haase pushed across the game's first run with an RBI single to plate Smith, while Chase McDaniel followed with a perfect sac bunt to score Nett and give SMSU a 2-0 lead.

UMary pushed across a run in the fourth taking advantage of a hit by pitch, a two-out wild pitch and an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Marauders would tie the game in the fifth with another two-out run-scoring single to make the score 2-2.

The game wasn't tied for long as Kalenberg led-off the bottom of the fifth drilling a 0-1 pitch the home run down the left field line to put the Mustangs back in front. Later in the frame, Caleb Gardow walked and following a sac bunt, Wenzel hit his second homer of the season over the left-center wall.

Latendresse was replaced on the mound with a runner on and one out in the sixth by Brady Petron, who ended the threat with a strikeout and ground out. Petron walked the first two batters he faced in the seventh to summon Lasley into the game. Facing UMary's top two hitters, Lasley locked up the win on just three pitches with the double play and fly out.

SMSU out-hit UMary 6-4 in the opener with Wenzel, Nett, Haase, McDaniel, Kalenberg and Peyton Nash finishing with one hit each.

In game two, SMSU once again took an early lead as Wenzel reached on a one-out single and later scored on a fielding error by the Marauders' third baseman.

UMary took the lead in the second using a hit by pitch and a pair of hits to take a 2-1 advantage. The score moved to 4-1 in the fourth as the Marauders took advantage of two walks and a passed ball to score a pair of runs on just one hit.

The margin moved to 5-1 in the sixth as UMary used a two-out walk, a wild pitch and a run-scoring single off SMSU relief pitcher Kobe Lovell.

SMSU cut the deficit in half in the sixth as McDaniel and Latendresse reached on one-out singles. McDaniel would later score on a wild pitch, while Latendresse came across the plate on a clutch two-out single by Kalenberg to make the score 5-3 after six.

UMary added two big runs in the eighth to expand the lead to 7-3. Following back-to-back walks to start the inning, the Marauders plated one run on a sac fly and another on a wind-blown single.

The Mustangs picked up a run in the eighth as Andy Andresen came through with a two-out single to score McDaniel.

Trailing 7-4 in the ninth with one out, Nett and Haase singled, while McDaniel walked to load the bases. Latendresse was hit by a pitch to plate the first run and was followed by an infield single by Hunter Krommenhoek to cut the score to 7-6. Kip Gronholz lofted a deep sac fly to right to score McDaniel and send the game to extra innings.

In the 10th, UMary loaded the bases with two outs, but Lasley came through with a strikeout—his second of the inning—to keep the game tied.

Smith started the game-winning rally in the 10th with a hit by pitch. He promptly stole second to move into scoring position. Following a strikeout and ground out that moved Smith to third base, Haase drilled a 3-1 pitch to right field for the game-winning hit.

Theo Giedd made the start on the mound for the Mustangs and lasted 3 1/3 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits with four strikeouts, while hitting two batters and walking a pair. Lovell was strong in relief firing 3 2/3 innings and allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Lasley (1-0), who earlier in the day picked-up his first career save, earned his first career victory in game two.

SMSU held an 11-9 advantage in hits with Kalenberg, Haase and Nett each collecting two hits. SMSU won game two despite walking 10 and hitting three batters.
