MARSHALL, Minn. – Freshman
Owen Latendresse tossed 5 1/3 innings with a career-high eight strikeouts, while
Max Kalenberg and Keenen Wenzel hit home runs in the fifth inning to lift Southwest Minnesota State to a 5-2 win over the University of Mary in game one of a NSIC baseball doubleheader at Legion Field.
Latendresse (2-2) was dominate throughout most of his outing, allowing just four hits and two runs, while walking three.
Craig Lasley recorded his first career save entering the seventh inning with no outs and the tying run at the plate, but he coaxed a 5-4-3 double play and a fly out to seal the victory.
The game was tied at 2-2 in the fifth before Kalenberg smashed a solo homer to put SMSU back in front. Wenzel would later blast a 2-run shot to extend the lead to 5-2.
SMSU jumped on the board early to take a two-run lead in the first inning.
Robbie Smith started the rally with a hit by pitch and later advanced to third on a one-out single by
Isaac Nett.
Jaxon Haase pushed across the game's first run with an RBI single to plate Smith, while
Chase McDaniel followed with a perfect sac bunt to score Nett and give SMSU a 2-0 lead.
UMary pushed across a run in the fourth taking advantage of a hit by pitch, a two-out wild pitch and an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Marauders would tie the game in the fifth with another two-out run-scoring single to make the score 2-2.
The game wasn't tied for long as Kalenberg led-off the bottom of the fifth drilling a 0-1 pitch the home run down the left field line to put the Mustangs back in front. Later in the frame,
Caleb Gardow walk and following a sac bunt, Wenzel hit his second homer of the season over the left-center wall.
Latendresse was replaced on the mound with a runner on and one out in the sixth by
Brady Petron, who ended the threat with a strikeout and ground out. Petron walked the first two batters he faced in the seventh to summon Lasley into the game. Facing UMary's top two hitters, Lasley locked up the win on just three pitches with the double play and fly out.
