SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Minnesota State University, currently atop the league standings and ranked No. 13 in the nation, ran its winning streak to six straight with a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader sweep over Southwest Minnesota State University in college baseball on Wednesday. MSU won game one scoring six runs in the seventh for a 13-1 victory and then completed the sweep with a 6-2 win in game two.
The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Legion Field in Marshall, but due to poor weather was relocated to Bishop Mueller Field on the campus of Briar Cliff University.
The two victories push MSU's record to 18-4 overall, 11-2 NSIC, while SMSU drops to 8-15 overall, 1-10 NSIC.
The Mavericks opened game one scoring two runs in the first inning on two walks and two singles. MSU would add a single run in the third and four more in the fourth to build a 7-0 lead.
The Mustangs put a run up in the home half of the fourth as
Jaxon Haase drilled his first career home run into a stiff wind over the left field fence to make the score 7-1.
Hayden Molva (0-3) made the start on the mound for SMSU and allowed seven runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts in four innings.
Cameron Jensen came on in relief and fired a pair of shutout innings before the Mavericks scored six runs in the seventh.
MSU starting pitcher Cam Kline, a 2019 All-American, fired six innings and struck out eight while allowing eight hits to earn the victory.

In game two, the Mavericks scored three runs on three hits in the top of the first off Mustang starting pitcher
Owen Latendresse, who was making his first career start on the mound.
After tossing a scoreless second inning, Latendresse helped his own cause smashing his team-leading fifth home run of the season over the left-center field wall to trim the deficit to 3-1.
SMSU cut into the lead in the third as Haase smacked a one-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a clutch two-out run-scoring single by
Keenan Wenzel.
MSU took advantage of walks and hit by pitches along with several timely hits to score single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to expand the margin to 6-2.
SMSU had a great chance to cut into the lead in the seventh loading the bases with no outs behind hits from Latendresse and Andresen along with an MSU fielding error, but Maverick pitcher Jack Zigan struck out three straight batters to end the threat.
Latendresse (1-1) gave the Mustangs a solid start on the mound, tossing five innings and allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Theo Giedd allowed two runs in 1 1/3 innings, while
Craig Lasley fired the final 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief.
MSU's Jack Zigan recorded five shutout innings of relief to pick up the victory recording eight strikeouts and walking none, while allowing just three hits.
The Mustangs finished the nightcap with eight hits with Andresen and Latendresse each collecting two.
SMSU is scheduled to host nationally ranked Augustana this weekend for a three-game series at Legion Field.
