MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball team saw a last second three-pointer draw iron, losing a 77-75 heartbreaker to No. 20-ranked MSU Moorhead on Friday night inside the R/A Facility.
SMSU drops to 10-6 overall, 6-5 NSIC, while MSUM jumps to 14-3 overall, 9-2 NSIC.
The Mustangs had five in double figures, led by a 16 point, eight rebound, and two block effort from
Jake Phipps.
Dunwa Omot added 14 points, three assists, three steals, and two blocks and
Anthony Costello totaled 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting off the bench.
Majok Majouk tallied 12 points, shooting 5 of 7 from the field and 2 of 3 from beyond the arc, grabbed six rebounds, and dished three assists.
Cliff McCray rounded out the double-digit scorers, scoring 11 points on 5 of 8 shooting from the field.
Jakob Braaten (seven points), and
Noah Chamberlain (seven rebounds), rounded out seven Mustangs to play at least 20 minutes.
SMSU closed the night shooting 51.7 percent (30-58) from the field and were 6 of 12 from 3-point range. The Mustangs held a 44-30 scoring advantage in the paint.
MSUM shot 45.5 percent (30 of 66) from the field while making 13 of 31 from 3-point range.
Lorenzo McGhee led the Dragons with 19 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks, making 5 of 10 from beyond the arc.
McGhee led an attack that opened the game 8 of 12 from the field, scoring nine of MSUM's first 20 points to lead 20-12 with 12:13 to go in the first half.
Majouk sparked an 8-0 run to even the score, drilling a three and finishing a dunk off a Phipps block and Omot pass before an Omot three to even the score at 20-20 with 10:48 to go in the first half.
The Mustangs continued to run the floor, scoring seven of the next 10 points, capped by back-to-back Phipps layups to force a Dragon timeout and lead 27-23 with 8:50 to go in the half.
MSUM would go on to take a 35-34 lead with 5:42 left in the half, but four Phipps points and four McCray points gave the Mustangs another 8-0 run and a 42-35 lead with 3:44 to go, but a stingy MSUM team hung around, scoring nine of the final 12 points to trail by just one at 45-44 into the locker room.
After a McCray free throw to open the second half scoring, MSUM compiled an 8-0 run of their own to lead 52-46 at the 16:37 mark of the second half.
The Dragons saw their largest lead of the game with 10:23 left, going up 61-52, but a scrappy Mustang team scored the next five points to get within four at 61-57 with 8:39 to go.
Neither team would score again until a Jacob Beeninga three-pointer with 6:18 left to lead 64-57, but an Omot jumper the next possession and a pair of Costello dunks sandwiching an MSUM layup brought SMSU within three at 66-63 with 4:20 left.
A Phipps three-pointer with 2:49 left brought the Mustangs within two points at 70-68. MSUM grew their lead to five at 74-69 with 1L25 left, and a Gavin Baumgartner off-balance three –pointer as the shot clock expired put the Dragons ahead 77-69 with 43 seconds left.
Just as the game looked out of reach, McCray got to the basket for a quick layup and forced a flop call on the Dragons, with Omot making the technical free throw to go down 77-72 with 31 seconds left. .
MSUM went on to miss the front end of a one-and-one, and Costello drilled a triple following an offensive rebound to trail by just two at 77-75 with eight seconds left.
The Mustangs would get one last breath, as the Dragons would again miss the front end of a one-and –one, but a Costello turnaround would not fall at the buzzer, bringing the game to its final score.
The Mustangs close their weekend at 5:30 p.m., hosting Northern State on Saturday afternoon inside the R/A Facility.
