Mustangs slay Dragons in overtime battle

MARSHALL, Minn. – On the night she was honored for joining the 1,000-point club, Jenna Borchers scored a game-high 22 points to push the Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team past the MSU Moorhead Dragons 82-75 in overtime on Friday night inside the R/A Facility.

After being outscored 18-9 in the fourth quarter, The Mustangs made their mark in the overtime period, going on a 14-3 run in the opening three minutes and a 16-9 run over the course of overtime to win the game.

The Mustangs, now 11-5 overall and 8-3 in NSIC action, shot 41.1 percent (30 of 73) from the field, 34.2 percent (13 of 38) from three, and 69.2 percent (9 of 13) from the free throw line, while the Dragons, 8-7 overall and 5-6 NSIC, shot 47.1 percent (32 of 68) from the field, 28.6 percent (4 of 14) from beyond the arc, and 58.3 percent (7 of 12) from the free throw line.

Ball security was the key to the game, with SMSU turning it over a season-low six times and forcing MSUM into 12 turnovers. The Mustangs turned that into a 15-5 scoring advantage off turnovers, including a 6-0 advantage in overtime.

The Mustangs had three in double figures scoring, with Sam Wall scoring 19 points and Bri Stoltzman tallying a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to go along with Borchers. Hannah Parsley and Kenzie Jones each scored eight points, with Parsley adding nine rebounds.

After going down 6-2 in the early stages, SMSU got the offense rolling, scoring 11 straight points, led by five from Peyton Blandin, to lead 13-6 with 1:58 left in the first quarter.

MSUM went on to score eight of the final 10 points in the quarter to trail 15-14 into the second quarter. The Dragons opened the second quarter with the same steam, going on a 9-0 run to take a 23-15 lead with 8:18 left in the half.

A Borchers three ended the run, igniting a Mustang attack that would make its next five three-pointers on a 15-2 run to take a 30-25 lead with 4 minutes left, and the teams split 16 points to end the half and head into the locker room with a 38-33 lead in favor of SMSU.

MSUM inched closer, outscoring SMSU 9-7 in the first 5:35 of the third quarter to make it a one possession game at 45-42. The Mustangs blew the game open the next three minutes, with Parsley, Stoltzman, and Wall leading a 12-2 run to take a 57-44 lead with 1:25 left in the third quarter, but the Dragons would cut it to 57-48 just before the end of the quarter.

MSU dominated the final frame to tie the game at 66-66, but neither team could score in the final 1:24, sending the game into overtime, where the Mustangs closed it out.

The Mustangs close their weekend at 3:30 p.m., hosting Northern State on Saturday afternoon inside the R/A Facility.
