MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team fell short after a second half comeback, losing 70-59 in overtime against St. Cloud State on Friday night inside the R/A Facility.
SMSU falls to 11-7 overall, 8-5 NSIC, while the Huskies move to 13-4 overall, 10-3 NSIC.
The Mustangs shot 37.9 percent (22 of 58) from the field, 33.3 percent (6 of 18) from three, and 75 percent (9 of 12) from the free throw line, while the Huskies shot 38.2 percent (26 of 68) from the field, 29.4 percent (5 of 17) from the three-point line, and 61.9 percent (13 of 21) from the free throw line while holding SMSU scoreless in the overtime frame.
Sam Wall lit it up from deep, scoring 19 points and shooting 5 of 7 from three to lead the Mustangs.
Bri Stoltzman added 17 points, six rebounds, four steals, and two blocks, and
Hannah Parsley scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Reigning NSIC Player of the Week Katrina Theis led SCSU with 29 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
The Huskies held a 13-4 advantage on the offensive glass, leading to a 13-2 difference in second chance points that would prove to be the difference.
SCSU came out of the gates with a 10-2 advantage through four minutes. A Parsley three ended the run and started a 6-0 run to bring the Mustangs within two, and a Stoltzman layup with 15 seconds tied the game for the first time at 15-15, but a SCSU free throw with five seconds left gave the Huskies a 16-15 lead after the first quarter.
Wall came out and drilled a triple on the first possession of the second quarter to give the Mustangs their first lead of the night at 18-16, but a 7-0 SCSU run followed, giving them a 23-18 lead with 6:50 left in the half.
The Huskies outscored SMSU 13-9 the rest of the half, giving them a 36-27 lead into the locker room.
Stoltzman would come out of the locker room on a mission, going on a 6-0 run of her own before a Parsley layup, Stoltzman free throws,
Peyton Blandin layup, and Borchers free throws brought the Mustangs back and gave them a 41-36 lead with 5:16 left in the third quarter.
A 6-0 SCSU run handed them the lead right back, but Wall scored five points in a 7-4 run to end the quarter to move to a 48-46 score after three quarters, in favor of the Mustangs.
Theis began to work, scoring seven points in a 9-1 run to open the fourth quarter and give the Huskies a 55-49 lead with 5:26 to go.
Stoltzman stepped to the line and made a pair of free throws at the 4:48 mark, and Wall drilled a pair of three pointers for a 57-55 Mustang lead with 3:52 left.
The next four points went in favor of SCSU, but a Borchers layup with 45 seconds to go tied the game, the final points the Mustangs would score in the game.
Theis closed the game scoring six overtime points, leading an 11-0 OT period and giving the Huskies the win.
The Mustangs close out a four-game homestand hosting Minnesota Duluth at 5:30 p.m., on Saturday afternoon inside the R/A Facility.
