Mustangs conclude cross-division action at BSU and UMC

    THE LOOK AHEAD

• The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team (11-8, 8-6 NSIC) closes NSIC North Division action.

• SMSU will take on Bemidji State University (5-13, 2-12 NSIC) on Friday night with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m. before facing Minnesota Crookston (9-11, 8-6 NSIC) on Saturday with game time slated for 5:30 p.m. 

• SMSU has lost three consecutive games after an 11-3 stretch and is currently in third place in the NSIC South Division standings, two games ahead of fourth place Wayne State and three games behind Minnesota State and Augustana, who are tied for first. 

• BSU is last in the NSIC North Division standings, while UMC is in fourth place. 

• Even after falling to SCSU and UMD, SMSU is 8-6 in conference action, its best conference start since going 9-5 in 2004-05. 

• SMSU has four road/neutral site victories this season, the second most since the 2010-11 season.

• The Mustangs are also 7-4 at home and have finished over .500 at home in each of their last four seasons.

     LAST TIME OUT

• The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team fell short after a second half comeback, losing 70-59 in overtime against St. Cloud State on Friday night inside the R/A Facility.

• The Mustangs shot 37.9 percent (22 of 58) from the field, 33.3 percent (6 of 18) from three, and 75 percent (9 of 12) from the free throw line, while the Huskies shot 38.2 percent (26 of 68) from the field, 29.4 percent (5 of 17) from the three-point line, and 61.9 percent (13 of 21) from the free throw line while holding SMSU scoreless in the overtime frame. 

•  The Mustangs then fell to the No. 13-ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, 87-75, on Saturday night inside the R/A Facility.

• The Mustangs struggled inside, getting outscored 64-24 in the paint and allowing 12 UMD blocks without one of their own. 

    FAST BREAK 

• The 11-8 start to open the season is the Mustangs' best start since starting 12-7 in the 2009-10 season.

• The Mustangs have shot at least 50 percent in five  games this season and are 34th in the nation with a 43.7 field goal percentage, also slotting 12th with a 36.9 percentage from three-point range on the season.

• Their three-point percentage does not come with a lack of trying, as SMSU has made the 10th most three pointers per game in the nation, making 9.2 three-pointers per game and shoot the 31st most three-pointers with 24.9 attempts per game.

• The Mustangs have made 132 three-pointers in conference play, 32 more than the next closest team, and are making them at a 36.5 percent clip, second best in the NSIC. 

• SMSU has touted a high-octane offense, ranking 24th in the nation scoring 75.2 points per game, and have turned it over 13.5 times per game, the 25th fewest total in DII.

Bri Stoltzman leads the Mustangs with 13.5 ppg, a 51.6 field goal percentage and 6.6 rpg, tied for first with 36 steals, and is second with 47 assists.

Hannah Parsley is scoring 12.7 ppg, adding 5.4 rpg, 36 steals, 30 assists, and nine blocks while shooting 48.3 percent from the field as an all-around threat for the Mustangs.

Jenna Borchers is fourth on the team with 11.8 ppg and leads the team with 50 assists. 

Sam Wall (13.1 ppg), and Madison Gehloff (8.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg) round out the starting lineup, with both shooting at least 41 percent from the field.  

Peyton Blandin has provided a spark off the bench this season, scoring 8.1 points per game, grabbing 3.7 rebounds per game, and shooting 33.8 percent from behind the arc. 

•Wall has made 46 three-pointers on a 40.7 three-point percentage, while Borchers has sunk 41 threes on 36.9 percent shooting from deep. 

• Both Wall and Borchers rank inside the top six in the NSIC in three point percentage and makes.  

• Borchers holds the program record for career three-pointers made with 226 makes after breaking the previous record of 199 on Dec. 1. 

• Also moving up the career rankings is Wall, who is now 10th in program history in both three pointers made (132), and three point percentage (37.7 percent) in 87 career games. 

• Borchers became the 23rd member of the 1,000 point club on Saturday, Nov. 19 against Northern Michigan.

• She currently ranks ninth in program history with a .790 career free throw percentage and 13th in program history with 1,158 career points

•SMSU is averaging 75.2 ppg while opponents are averaging 67.6 ppg. SMSU has a plus-0.9 rebounding margin.

•SMSU is shooting 43.7 percent from the field, 36.9 percent from the 3-point line, and 73.9 percent the free-throw line.

    SMSU?HEAD COACH TOM?WEBB

Tom Webb is in his seventh season as head coach with a 69-99 record, including 51-83 in NSIC play. 

• Webb is 160-222 overall in his 15th season as?head coach at the Division II level after compiling a record of 92-123 in eight seasons (2008-16) as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.). 

• Webb guided the Mustangs to a 10-3 home record, their best home record since the 2002-03 season and led SMSU to its first home NSIC tournament game since 2005, and first NSIC tournament victory since 2003, ending the season with their first ever tournament game inside the Pentagon.

• Webb recorded his 100th career Division II?win against Wisconsin-Parkside (91-83) on Nov. 16, 2018.

    BEMIDJI STATE SERIES HISTORY

• SMSU and BSU will meet for the 79th time with the Huskies leading 43-35 since its inception in 1977.

• The teams last met a season ago in Marshall, with the Beavers winning 70-67 after the Mustangs were outscored 24-10 in the third quarter. 

• SMSU have won three of the previous four meetings. 

•The Mustangs are 16-21 all-time in Bemidji in the series.

•SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 3-2 all-time versus BSU.

    MINNESOTA CROOKSTON SERIES HISTORY

• SMSU and Minnesota Crookston will meet for the 36th time with the Mustangs leading 22-13 in a series that began in 1996.

• The Mustangs defeated UMC 63-55 last season.

• SMSU has won three of the last five meetings after losing nine of the previous 11 meetings.

• The Mustangs are 11-6 all-time in Crookston.

•SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 3-2 all-time versus Minnesota Crookston.

• BSU is 2-12 in the NSIC on the season after losing at Wayne State and Augustana last weekend. 

• The Huskies were picked to finish 10th in the NSIC and sixth in the NSIC North in the NSIC Preseason Poll.

Trinity Yoder leads BSU with 14.3 ppg, adding 4.6 rpg and 80 assists.

Maddie Schires averages 11.3 points, and Sam Pogatchnik leads the team with 6.7 rpg while scoring 9.2 ppg.

• BSU is shooting 37.4 percent from the field, 27.1 percent from 3-point range, and 68.5 percent from the free throw line.

• The Beavers average 58.4 points per game, while opponents average 71.3 points per game.

    MINNESOTA CROOKSTON NOTES  

2022-23 Record: 9-11 overall, 8-6 NSIC

Head Coach: Mike Roysland, 17th season, 144-297 at UMC

Mascot: Golden Eagles

• UMC is 8-6 NSIC after losing to Augustana and defeating Wayne State on the road last weekend. 

• The Golden Eagles were picked to finish last in the NSIC and the NSIC North in the NSIC Preseason Poll.

Minnesota Crookston is led by Emma Miller, whose 18.6 ppg is the second best mark in the NSIC and leads the team with 62 assists. 

Bren Fox leads the NSIC with 9.1 rpg, averaging 8.3 ppg in the process. 

• UMC is shooting 39.3 percent from the field, 33.4 percent from 3-point range, and 78.5 percent from the free throw line.

• The Golden Eagles average 64.5 points per game, while opponents average 71.2 points per game.
