MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team won the three-team SMSU tournament held on Saturday in the PE Gym.
SMSU opened the day with a dominant win over Manitoba, defeating the Rolling Bisons by a final score of 64-45.
Next Up, the Rolling Bisons faced off with the Sioux Falls Wheelers. In a game that went down to the wire, Sioux Falls was able to outlast Manitoba, winning 50-44.
The final matchup of the round robin portion of the tournament was to decide who would get the first seed in the tournament. The Wheelers built up an early lead that was too much for the Mustangs to overcome. Sioux Falls earned the bye with a 59-54 final score.
In the third-place game, SMSU once again faced off against Manitoba. The Mustangs returned to form in the game, cruising to a 66-47 victory.
The championship game was between the Mustangs and the Wheelers. SMSU continued their hot streak from the previous game, opening up a large lead early and holding that lead for a 71-53 win.
The Mustangs will return to action on Friday, Feb. 17, when they travel to Edinboro, Pa., to participate in the Edinboro tournament against Edinboro, Wisconsin-Whitewater and Missouri.
