SMSU completes weekend sweep with 14 3-pointers at UMC

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team completed a weekend road sweep on Saturday night with a 75-58 victory over Minnesota Crookston inside Lysaker Gymnasium.
 
Sam Wall poured in a game-high 22 points with a career-high six 3-pointers, while Madison Gehloff added 18 points on 8 of 13 shooting. Payton Blandin also reached double figures in scoring with 15 points, while connecting on three 3-pointers.
 
The victory pushes SMSU's record to 13-8 overall, 10-6 NSIC, while UMC had its two-game win streak stopped and falls to 10-12, 9-7 NSIC.
 
SMSU closed the night shooting 50 percent (29 of 58) from the field, while making 14 of 37 from 3-point range. The Mustangs, which held a 20-4 scoring advantage in fast-break points, also outrebound the Golden Eagles, 40-35. Jenna Borchers pulled down a season-high nine rebounds with teammate Hannah Parsley grabbing eight rebounds.
 
Emma Miller led the Golden Eagles with 22 points, while Bren Fox scored 16 points with nine rebounds. UMC finished the night shooting 35 percent (24 of 68) with five 3-pointers.
 
SMSU opened the game building a 13-5 lead in the opening five minutes and eventually ended the opening quarter with a 21-13 advantage.
 
Wall would give SMSU a 29-19 lead following a 3-pointer in the second quarter before UMC rallied back and cut the deficit to 29-28 with 2:30 left in the half. Bri Stoltzman ended the run with a field goal and was followed less than a minute later on a layup by Gehloff to give the Mustangs a 33-30 halftime lead.
 
SMSU stormed out of the halftime break with 3-pointers by Borchers, Gehloff, and Parsley to push the Mustang advantage to 45-30. UMC had an answer and pulled to within 50-44 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter before Wall hit two free throws and Gehloff scored a field goal to help extend the lead to 54-47 after three quarters.
 
Wall would help put the game away early in the fourth quarter drilling a pair of 3-pointers and was followed by a Gehloff jumper to give the Mustangs a 62-47 lead with 7:22 left in the game. Following back-to-back field goals by UMC, Gehloff connected on a 3-pointer and Parsley scored moments later on a layup to extend the margin to 67-51 and SMSU never looked back in earning the win.
 
SMSU continues road action next Friday returning to NSIC South Division play with a key match-up versus Minnesota State with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
