Late comeback sinks SMSU in loss to UMary

BISMARCK, N.D. – An 11-0 run in the final 5:05 gave the University of Mary a 62-57 victory over the Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball team on Friday night at the McDowell Activity Center.

The Mustangs, 9-5 overall and 5-4 in NSIC play, shot 48.1 percent (25 of 52) from the field, 30.8 percent (4 of 13), from three, and 75 percent (3 of 4) from the free throw line in defeat. UMary, 8-5 overall and 4-5 NSIC, shot 43.6 percent (24 of 55) from the field, 42.1 percent (8 of 19) from three, and 60 percent (6 of 10) from the free throw line.

The difference came on the offensive glass, where UMary held a 15-5 advantage, turning that into a 14-8 advantage in second chance points.

Jake Phipps led all scorers with 22 points, shooting 10 of 13 from the field, and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Dunwa Omot scored 10 points, and Anthony Costello, Jakob Braaten, and Majok Majouk scored seven points apiece. Makouk added four rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.

Noah Chamberlain led the team with four assists, while Cliff McCray picked up three steals.

Gertautas Urbonavicius led the Marauders with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and four three pointers on five attempts.

After a 5-2 start for UMary, the Mustangs made three consecutive shots to take an 8-5 lead with 16:39 left in the first half.

The teams traded buckets the rest of the half, with six ties over the final 16:39.  The Mustangs wouldn't trail in that segment, and led by as many as four at 19-15, 22-18, 28-24, and 30-26.

UMary tied the score at 30-30 with 43 seconds left in the half, but a Costello free throw with 14 seconds left gave SMSU a 31-30 lead at the half.

Phipps led all scorers with nine first half points, while Omot scored eight points, and Chamberlain added three rebounds and three assists.

The Mustangs opened the second half in control, scoring the first seven points, including five from Braaten, to take a 38-30 lead with 16:53 left in the game.

After a pair of UMary layups to force an SMSU timeout, the Mustangs got the points back in a flash, scoring a pair of baskets in 25 seconds, capped by an alley-oop from McCray to Majouk to get the lead to 42-34 with 13:35 to go.

UMary chipped away, converting an and-one with 10 minutes left to trail 46-45. Phipps answered with a layup, and after a UMary layup, hit from deep to give the Mustangs a 51-47 lead with 8:24 left.

A McCray layup with 5:05 left gave SMSU a 57-51 lead, but the UMary run to close the game was enough for the victory.

The Mustangs head north for a Saturday afternoon game against Minot State at 5:30 p.m., to conclude their weekend.
