Men’s basketball defeats national powerhouse and top-ranked Northwest Missouri State

ST. JOSEPH, Mo.--The Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball team defeated No. 1 Northwest Missouri State University 63-56 on Saturday afternoon, claiming victory over a top-ranked opponent for the first time ever in program history.

SMSU moves to 2-0 on the season and begins NSIC play on Tuesday, Nov. 21 against Wayne State in Wayne, Neb. at 5:30 p.m.
 
Cliff Cofield led the Mustangs with a team-high 20 points on 8 of 9 shooting, while grabbing five rebounds, dishing five assists, and snatching 2 steals. Dunwa Omot scored 15 points to help the Mustangs earn its second season victory. Mustang guard Jakob Braaten rounded out the double-digit SMSU scorers with 11 points on 3 of 7 shooting.
 
Bennett Stirtz led the Bearcats with 29 points on 9 of 19 shooting, including 6-12 from deep. NWMSU, which drops to 1-1 overall, was ranked at No. 1 in the nation following the results of preseason polls last week.
 
SMSU trailed 46-38 with ten minutes and 31 seconds remaining in the game, but a Stevens paint bucket, followed by a Mekhi Shaw steal and Stevens free throws brought the Mustangs back to down four 46-42 with just over seven minutes on the clock.
 
Braaten would later drill a 3-pointer to inch the Mustangs closer at the 5:39 mark, but the Bearcats wouldn't go away and extended the lead back to five with 5:14 remaining following Stirtz free throws. SMSU would later tie the game with 3:16 to go off a Cofield lay-in. Mason Lund would drill a three to give the Mustangs the lead 53-50 with 2:26 remaining, but would give up a three back on defense just one possession later. Cofield would seal the win for the Mustangs with a paint jumper at 1:01 remaining, forcing NWMSU to foul for the remainder of the half.  
 
SMSU closed the game shooting 43.5 percent (20 of 46) from the field and 8 of 18 from 3-point range. The Mustangs were out rebounded 28-26.
 
NWMSU finished the game shooting 43.2 percent (19 of 44), while making 7 of 23 3-pointers.
