Gehloff's season-high not enough as Mustangs fall to Warriors

WINONA, Minn. – Despite a season-high 18-point scoring performance by Madison Gehloff, the Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team struggled to piece anything together in a 76-61 loss to the Winona State Warriors on Friday night inside the McCown Gymnasium.

The Mustangs drop to 2-5 overall, and fall to 1-1 in NSIC play. Winona State earns its first win of the season to move to 1-5 overall, 1-1 in the NSIC.

Senior guard Madison Gehloff scored a team-high 18 points in the contest on 50 percent shooting (7-14), while adding three rebounds, an assist, and team-high three steals. Bri Stoltzman was the only other Mustang to reach double-figure scoring, grabbing 14 points on 5 of 14 shooting, while pulling down a team-high five rebounds, and dishing three assists. Peyton Blandin and Sam Wall combined for 16 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Hannah Parsley posted seven points and four rebounds.

SMSU shot 34 percent (22 of 65) from the field and 27 percent (9 of 33) from three while making 8 of 12 free throws. Winona State closed the game shooting a season-high 55.4 percent (31 of 56) from the field, 42 percent (5 of 12) from three, and finished a near-perfect 9 of 10 from the free throw line.

The Mustangs struck early, opening the game with three-straight 3-pointers to open the first quarter. Following a timeout with 8:06 remaining in the quarter, Olivia Gamoke sparked a 17-3 run for the Warriors for nearly six minutes of play to take the lead 17-12. Parsley would make a turnaround jumper at the buzzer to close the quarter at 17-14 in favor of WSU.

SMSU opened the second quarter scoring with a 3-point jumper from Wall, which was answered the following possession by the Warriors' Olivia Gamoke. Blandin pushed the Mustangs lead to 21-19 off a 3-pointer with 9:09 remaining in the half. Both teams would pursue the lead deep into the half before Kaitlyn Schrimpf drained a three pointer to put the Warriors up six. Kenzie Jones nailed a shot from deep to cut the lead to 36-33 in favor of the Warriors entering the second half.

The third quarter of play was the closest in score comparison with the Mustangs posting 15 points in the period and Warriors recording 17. Gehloff opened the half with a 3-pointer to tie the game at 36-36. Winona State answered with two layups on the other end to force a SMSU timeout. The final three minutes of the period showed back-and-forth play with neither team willing to go down, pushing the score to 53-48 in favor of WSU at the end of quarter three.

SMSU lost the rebound battle 39-27, and fouled four more times than Winona State in the loss. The Warriors committed four more turnovers than the Mustangs, yet tied SMSU in points created off turnovers 12-12.

Winona State continued its run into the final quarter, scoring 21 of the 32 opening points. Sam Wall made a layup to end the run with 1:40 left in the game, but the deficit would prove to be too much. WSU outscored SMSU 23-13 in the final quarter of play.
