MARSHALL, Minn. – Bri Stoltzman poured in a game-high 31 points with five rebounds and three steals to pace Southwest Minnesota State to an 86-80 victory over No. 19 ranked Minnesota Duluth in NSIC women's college basketball on Saturday night inside the R/A Facility.
It was the second 30-point game for Stoltzman this season, who closed the night making 9 of 18 field goals with three 3-pointers. She also made 10 of 13 from the free throw line.
SMSU improves to 4-6 overall with the victory, including 3-2 in NSIC play. UMD, which played in last season's NCAA national championship game, drops to 7-2 overall, 4-1 NSIC.
The victory was SMSU's first over UMD since Jan. 30, 2016, snapping a seven-game streak in the series.
SMSU, which defeated Concordia-St. Paul on Friday night, shot 51 percent (29 of 57) from the field, while making 8 of 19 from 3-point range. It was SMSU's second time this season shooting higher than 50 percent from the field.
Sam Wall scored 16 points with a pair of 3-pointers for the Mustangs, while
Hannah Parsley added 13 points, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, and dished out a team-high three assists.
Kenzie Jones came off the bench to score 12 points on 4 of 5 shooting with one 3-pointer to help the Mustang charge.
UMD finished the night shooting 46 percent (30 of 66), while connecting on 3 of 11 from 3-point range.
SMSU started the game strong in building a 22-16 lead with two minutes left in the opening quarter following a field goal by Wall.
SMSU held a 26-23 advantage following 10 minutes, but UMD answered back and tied the game three times in the second quarter, including at 37-37 midway through the quarter. Wall would start a 9-0 run for the Mustangs with a field goal and was followed by a layup and a 3-pointer by Stoltzman before Jones capped the run with a layup to give the Mustangs their largest lead of the half at 46-37.
Leading 46-39 at the break, SMSU would maintain the lead for the third quarter, including taking an 11-point lead at 62-51 with 1:03 following a pair of free throws by Stoltzman.
UMD answered in the fourth quarter and used a big run to tie the game at 71 with five minutes left in the game. Parsley would give SMSU the lead back with a free throw and moments later was followed by a 3-pointer by Wall and another 3-pointer by Stoltzman at the 3:13 mark to give the Mustangs a 78-71 advantage.
The Bulldogs would later trim the deficit to 82-80 with 11 seconds left in the game, but Stoltzman iced the game with two free throws to give the Mustangs their first over a ranked team this season.
The Bulldogs were led by Ella Gilbertson, who scored 20 points on 7 of 11 shooting.
SMSU continues home play on Thursday, Dec. 14, with a 7:30 p.m. match-up versus Sioux Falls.
