Mustangs close regular season action at Augustana and against Wayne State

    THE LOOK AHEAD

• The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team (16-9, 13-7 NSIC) closes regular season action, traveling to Augustana on Thursday before hosting Wayne State on Saturday.

• The Mustangs will take on the Vikings (22-4, 16-4 NSIC) on Thursday night in the Sanford Pentagon, with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m., before hosting the Wildcats (11-13, 7-13 NSIC) on Saturday for Senior Day, with game time scheduled for 5:30 p.m. 

• SMSU has now won 16 of its last 23 games and is currently locked into third place in the NSIC South Division standings.

• The Mustangs will host the sixth seed of the NSIC North on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at either 5:30 p.m., or 6 p.m., in the first round of the NSIC Tournament.

• After its weekend sweep, SMSU is 13-7 in conference action, its best conference win percentage since 2002-03. 

•SMSU defeated Augustana (94-60) at home and fell on the road to Wayne State (72-62) on the road earlier this season. Box scores from both games this season can be found on pages 19-20.

• SMSU has won seven of its last eight road games, the best stretch since winning 11 consecutive games across two seasons from Dec. 16, 2000 to Dec. 8, 2001.

• The Mustangs are also 9-4 at home and have finished over .500 at home in each of their last four seasons. 

• Both games will be broadcast on 105.1 FM KARL with Ryan Rohlik and streamed on the NSIC Network.

    FAST BREAK 

• The Mustangs have 16 wins through their first 25 games, the most since going 17-8 in the first 25 games of 2004-05.

• SMSU has shot at least 50 percent in six  games this season and are 30th in the nation with a 44.2 field goal percentage, also slotting 16th with a 36.3 percentage from three-point range on the season.

• Their three-point percentage does not come with a lack of trying, as SMSU has made the 14th most three pointers per game in the nation, making 8.8 three-pointers per game and shoot the 37th most three-pointers with 24.2 attempts per game.

• The Mustangs have made 176 three-pointers in conference play, 33 more than the next closest team, and are making them at a 35.8 percent clip, second in the NSIC. 

Sam Wall has made 62 three-pointers this season, the 25th most in the country, and is one of nine players in the country to made at least 62 three pointers while shooting at least 42.5 percent from beyond the arc. 

• Wall and Jenna Borchers (52) are one of only five sets of teammates in DII to have at least 52 made three-pointers this season.

• Wall's 62 three pointers are the fourth most in a single season in program history.

• Borchers holds the program record for career three-pointers made with 237 makes after breaking the previous record of 199 on Dec. 1. She also ranks 10th among all DII players in career three-pointers made.

• SMSU has touted a high-octane offense, ranking 28th in the nation scoring 73.8 points per game and have shot 75.2 percent from the free throw line, ranking 42nd in the NCAA.

Bri Stoltzman leads the Mustangs with 13.6 ppg on a 54.4 field goal percentage, 6.7 rpg, and 48 steals, and is second with 61 assists.

• Wall is second on the Mustangs with 13.1 ppg, shooting 41.9 percent from the field and 42.5 percent from three. 

Hannah Parsley is scoring 12.1 ppg, adding 5.5 rpg, 47 steals, 35 assists, and 11 blocks while shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from three as an all-around threat for the Mustangs.

• Borchers is fourth on the team with 11.6 ppg and leads the team with 68 assists while shooting 37.4 percent from deep. 

Madison Gehloff  is scoring 8.5 ppg and grabbing 4.8 rpg to round out the starting lineup, shooting 42.7 percent from the field.

Peyton Blandin has provided a spark off the bench this season, scoring 8.0 points per game, grabbing 3.8 rebounds per game, and shooting 34.0 percent from behind the arc. 

• Borchers became the 23rd member of the 1,000 point club on Saturday, Nov. 19 against Northern Michigan.

• She currently ranks ninth in program history with a .799 career free throw percentage and 13th in program history with 1,225 career points

• Also moving up the career rankings is Wall, who is now fifth in program history in three point percentage (38.6 percent) and sixth in three pointers made (148) in 93 career games. 

•SMSU is averaging 73.8 ppg while opponents are averaging 66.6 ppg. SMSU has a plus-0.9 rebounding margin.

•SMSU is shooting 44.2 percent from the field, 36.3 percent from the 3-point line, and 75.2 percent the free-throw line.

    SMSU HEAD COACH TOM WEBB

Tom Webb is in his seventh season as head coach with a 74-100 record, including 56-84 in NSIC play. 

• Webb is 165-223 overall in his 15th season as head coach at the Division II level after compiling a record of 92-123 in eight seasons (2008-16) as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.). 

• Webb guided the Mustangs to a 10-3 home record, their best home record since the 2002-03 season and led SMSU to its first home NSIC tournament game since 2005, and first NSIC tournament victory since 2003, ending the season with their first ever tournament game inside the Pentagon.

     LAST TIME OUT

• The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team used 22 points from Sam Wall and a double-double from Bri Stoltzman to power past the Upper Iowa Peacocks 63-55 on Friday night inside the R/A Facility.

• It was Wall's third 20-point game of her career, all coming this season. She shot 8 of 12 from the field, including 4 of 6 from deep. Stoltzman finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, also leading the team with two blocks. It was Stoltzman's fourth double-double of her career, with each coming this season as well.

•  The Mustangs used a dominant second quarter and stellar play from Stoltzman to take down the Winona State Warriors 73-64 on Saturday night inside the R/A.

• Stoltzman tied a career-high 24 points, shooting 8 of 12 from the field and 8 of 9 from the free throw line, adding seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

    AUGUSTANA SERIES HISTORY

• SMSU and Augustana will meet for the 52nd time with the Vikings leading 33-18 since its inception in 1969.

• SMSU defeated Augie 94-60 earlier this season.

• Each team won its home game last season, with SMSU winning 72-58 on Dec. 4, 2021 before a 74-64 Viking win on Feb. 19, 2022.

• SMSU is 4-19 all-time on the road in the series.

• SMSU last beat Augustana in Sioux Falls on Jan. 3, 2020.

• SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 6-7 all-time versus Augustana.

    WAYNE STATE SERIES HISTORY

• SMSU and Wayne State will meet for the 64th time with the Wildcats holding a 42-21 edge in a series that started in 1991.

• SMSU lost in Wayne earlier this season.

• Each team won their home game last season

• SMSU is 14-17 all-time against WSC in Marshall. 

• The teams have split the last six meetings after SMSU lost the previous 21 games

• SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 3-10 all-time versus the Wildcats.

    AUGUSTANA NOTES  

2022-23 Record: 22-4 overall, 16-4 NSIC

Head Coach: Dave Krauth, 34th season, 692-300 at Augie

• Augie is 16-4 in the NSIC on the season after defeating CSP and falling to Minnesota State at home last weekend. 

• The Vikings were picked to finish third in the NSIC and second in the NSIC South in the NSIC Preseason Poll.

• Aislinn Duffy leads Augie with 16.6 ppg, 8.1 rpg, and 94 assists.

• Lauren Sees adds 15.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg, and 66 assists, and Michaela Jewett averages 12.0 ppg and 6.2 rpg.

• Augustana is shooting 45.0 percent from the field, 34.9 percent from 3-point range, and 77.9 percent from the free throw line.

• The Vikings average 75.4 points per game, while opponents average 61.7 points per game.

    WAYNE STATE NOTES  

2022-23 Record: 11-13 overall, 7-13 NSIC

Head Coach: Brent Pollari, 5th season, 57-66 at WSC

• WSC is 7-13 in the NSIC on the season after getting swept by Minnesota State and CSP at home.

• The Wildcats were picked to finish 13th in the NSIC and sixth in the NSIC South in the NSIC Preseason Poll

• Lauren Zacharias leads the Wildcats with 15.1 points per game in 24.9 minutes per game, leading the team with 4.4 rpg, 70 assists, and 52 steals. 

• Kassidy Pingel averages in 10.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, and Logan Hughes has 8.3 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

•Wayne State is shooting 38.9 percent from the field, 33.5 percent from 3-point range, and 73.7 percent from the free throw line.

•The Wildcats average 68.8 points per game, while opponents average 69.9 points per game.
