EDINBORO, Pa. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team finished a strong weekend (Feb. 17-18) winning three of four games during a two-day tournament hosted by Edinboro University.
SMSU opened the weekend on Friday with a forfeit victory over UW-Whitewater, due to UWW using an ineligible player, before suffering a tight 61-57 loss to Missouri.
On Saturday, SMSU earned a pair of victories over Edinboro, winning 75-38 and 64-38.
The Mustangs are now 8-2 overall.
In SMSU's first game versus UWW,
Emmanuel Fuentes Cervantes poured in 38 points on 18 of 31 shooting and also grabbed 23 rebounds.
Genaro Perez added eight points with
Joshua Brown and
Mackenley Laguerre each chipping in six points.
In the loss to Missouri, Brown paced the Mustangs with 18 points on 9 of 22 shooting, while Fuentes Cervantes added 17 points and Perez finished with 10 points.
In the first game win over Edinboro, Fuentes Cervantes scored 30 points on 15 of 16 shooting with Brown pouring in 20 points on 9 of 21 from the field.
In the second game to Edinboro, Fuentes Cervantes made 12 of 23 field goals for a game-high 24 points. Perez connected on 9 of 12 from the field and closed with 18 points, while Brown made seven field goals and scored 14 points.
SMSU returns to action on March 3-4 hosting a five-team tournament inside the PE Gym. Missouri, Arizona, Edinboro and Illinois will all play in the tournament.
