ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears rode a 6-0 run in the final 1:04 of regulation to defeat the Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball team 63-60 on Saturday afternoon inside the Gangelhoff Center.

Trailing 57-51 with 5:09 to play, SMSU charged back, scoring the next nine points, including seven from Omot, to take a 60-57 lead with 1:14 to play before CSP delivered four free throws and a layup to win the game.

The game saw 11 ties and 19 lead changes throughout, but CSP held a 17-6 advantage in fast break points and 11-6 in second chance points to help them come away with the victory.

The loss moves SMSU to 14-9 overall and 10-8 in the NSIC, while CSP jumps to 8-16 overall and 6-12 NSIC.

The Mustangs shot 47.1 percent (24 of 51) from the field, 26.7 percent (4 of 15) from three, and 80 percent (8 of 10) from the free throw line. The Golden Bears closed out shooting 40.4 percent (21 of 52) from the field, 30.8 percent (8 of 26) from three, and 92.9 percent (13 of 14) from the free throw line.

Jake Phipps poured in 22 points on 7 of 12 shooting from the field, grabbing five rebounds and dishing three assists. It was his third game scoring at least 20 points this season and ninth of his career.

Dunwa Omot closed the game scoring 14 points, including nine in the second half, and added three steals and two blocks. Majok Majouk, Jakob Braaten, and Cliff McCray all scored six points, while Braaten recorded six rebounds and three assists, and McCray finished with game-highs in rebounds (8), assists (5), and steals (4).

The early stages of the first half wouldn't see a multi-possession lead until a 5-0 SMSU run, capped by a Majouk dunk off an Omot steal at the 9:55 mark to put SMSU ahead 16-12.

CSP countered with a pair of threes to take the lead back at 18-16, but four consecutive Anthony Costello points put the Mustangs ahead again at 20-18 with 7:01 left.

The Golden Bears would, again, answer, scoring four in a row to take a 22-20 lead, and a Phipps three pointer put SMSU back in front at 23-22 with 5:52 left in the half.

Mustangs would end a scoreless drought of just over four minutes with an Omot layup at the 1:39 mark to take the lead back before a Phipps three-pointer brought it to 28-24 with 57 seconds left before halftime.

The mini spurt would end on a CSP layup with 24 seconds to go, giving SMSU a 28-26 lead into the half.

The Mustangs shot an even 50 percent (11 of 22) from the field, while CSP shot just 36 percent (9 of 25) but would stay within two thanks to an 8-2 advantage in fast break points and 4-0 in second chance points.

A 4-0 Phipps run put SMSU ahead at 45-43 at the 11:08 mark, and back and forth action brought the game to a 51-51 tie with 7:37 to go.

CSP went on to make three of their next four shots, including a layup with 5:11 to go, to take a seven point advantage and force a Mustang timeout before the final stretch to conclude action.

The Mustangs return home next Friday, welcoming Upper Iowa to the R/A Facility at 5:30 p.m.
