MARSHALL, Minn. -- The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team will open play at the 11-team National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament on Thursday in Whitewater, Wis.

SMSU, 9-5 overall, is the No. 8 seed in the tournament and will take on No. 9 Edinboro (Pa.) on Thursday starting at 8 a.m. If SMSU wins, it would face No. 1 seed the University of Arizona later that day at 4 p.m. If the Mustangs lose its opening game, they would play on Friday at 12 p.m.

SMSU has played Edinboro three times this season and has won all three games, including 64-28 in Marshall on March 3.

SMSU has won three national titles in program history in 1981, 1983 and 1986. The Mustangs finished 2-2 in last season's tournament held in Arlington, Texas, to place sixth overall.

Illinois has won the most championships, 15, since the tournament started in 1977. Wisconsin-Whitewater is second all-time with 13 championships.
