SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Southwest Minnesota State cracked out 14 hits, while earning 10 walks, in cruising to a 16-1 victory in game two of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader versus the University of Sioux Falls on Wednesday afternoon at Bishop Mueller Field on the campus of Briar Cliff University. The win salvaged a split on the day for SMSU following USF's 6-2 victory in the opener.
The two games were originally scheduled to be played at Legion Field in Marshall.
Carter Petron (2-1) tossed the complete game for the Mustangs in game two with five strikeouts, while allowing one run on two hits and three walks.
Owen Latendresse tied a career-high with four hits in game two, while
Robbie Smith tied a school record with four walks and scored three times. Gary Schleper was the last Mustang in 1984, to walk four times in a game.
Chase McDaniel had three hits and three RBIs, while
Jaxon Haase and
Peyton Nash both collected two hits.
Max Kalenberg had a big game as well with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Isaac Nett scored two runs and had two RBIs, while Nash also closed with two RBIs.
In the nightcap, USF (4-20, 3-7 NSIC) would use a two-out walk followed by a run-scoring double by Noah Buss to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
SMSU (12-8, 4-6 NSIC) would tie the game in the third with Smith starting the rally with a walk. With two outs and Smith at second, Nett smacked a run-scoring single to right field to plate Smith just ahead of the throw to tie the game at 1-1.
SMSU would put the game away with a huge fourth inning pushing across nine runs on six hits. Wenzel and Nash started the frame with singles with
Brady Petron lofting a sac fly to score Wenzel and put SMSU in the lead at 2-1. Following another walk to Smith, McDaniel crushed a two-run double to left-center and make the score 4-1. Haase would deliver a run-scoring single to score McDaniel before Kalenberg drilled a two-run single to push the lead to 7-1. Nash, Smith and McDaniel all would later work bases loaded walks to extend the lead to 10-1.
Latendresse had an RBI triple, while Kalenberg had a sac fly in the fifth to make the score 12-1. SMSU added four more in the sixth behind a sac fly by Nett, a two-run single by Latendresse and an RBI double by Nash.
In the opener, USF right-hander Cole Wright was effective in earning the victory holding SMSU hitless through five innings. Haase was able to break-up the no-hitter with a lead-off single in the sixth. Wright closed the game tossing 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on two hits with three walks, two hit batters and two strikeouts.
The Cougars scored a run in the top of the first on a single, sac bunt, balk and sac fly to take a 1-0 advantage. The Cougars added to the lead with a big four-run fourth inning on just one hit. Following two walks to open the frame, USF would score a run on a fielding error before a two-run triple plated two more runs to make the score 4-0. USF would add one more in the inning with another a sac RBI bunt.
The Mustangs would score its first run of the game in the fourth with Haase and Nett starting the rally with hit by pitches. Following a fly out, a walk to Kalenberg would load the bases, but SMSU would only score one run on a sac fly by
Jake Tauer.
The Cougars picked-up another run in the fifth on a pair of two-out hits and a walk.
SMSU added another run in the sixth as Haase started the rally with a single and moved to third on a single by Latendresse. Haase would score on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 6-2, but with a runners on first and second and one out, USF relief pitcher Reese Gaber coaxed a 4-3 doubles play to end the rally.
Shay Endres (1-2) suffered the loss allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits with three walks. He finished with a season-high six strikeouts.
Craig Lasley allowed one run in an inning of relief, while
Jerod Cyrus fired two scoreless innings for the Mustangs.
SMSU continues relocated games this weekend with a three-game series at Upper Iowa University starting on Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
