Mustangs struggle to overcome first half woes in SMSU tournament

Marshall, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team went 1-3 on the weekend in the five-team SMSU tournament held on Friday and Saturday in the PE Gym.  
 
In their first game of the tournament the Mustangs were matched up with the Edinboro Fighting Scotts. This is the was the third matchup of the season between the two teams with the Mustangs winning the first two matchups. The third game would follow that same trend, as the Mustangs were able to claim a 64-38 victory against the Fighting Scotts.  
 
In the second game for the Mustangs, they matched up with the Arizona Wildcats. The Wildcats opened the tournament with a dominant 72-44 victory over the Missouri Tigers. Arizona showed that they were the team to beat with weekend, as they were able to handle SMSU to a final score of 81-63 in favor of the Wildcats.  
 
After defeating the Tigers and the Mustangs, Arizona continued their dominance with a 72-29 victory against Edinboro.  
 
Friday's final matchup was the Missouri Tigers against the Illinois Fighting Illini. In the most competitive matchup of the day, the Illini were able to edge past the Tigers with a 59-53 victory 
 
Saturday began with a matchup between Arizona and Illinois. The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead that was too much for the Illini to overcome, defeating Illinois by a final score of 73-53.  
 
Next on the schedule was the Mustangs versus the Tigers. Similar to the first game of the day, the TIgers were able to build an early lead against the Tigers and despite a number of strong runs by the Mustangs, the Tigers were able to hold on for a 57-44 victory.  
 
The next couple of games saw the Illini and the Tigers pick up wins against the Fighting Scotts, by scores of 56-40 and 55-30 respectively. 
 
The final game of the tournament was between the Mustangs and the Illini. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, they once again fell behind early and were forced to try to dig themselves out of their first half hole. SMSU outscored Illinois in the second half, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Illini won by a final score of 71-58.

0-4 Edinboro  
 
The Mustangs will return to action on Thursday, Mar. 16, when they travel to Whitewater, Wis., to participate in the 2023 Men's National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament.
