Baseball earns fourth straight win behind strong pitching and long ball

TUCSON, Ariz. – Southwest Minnesota State built an early three-run lead and used strong starting pitching to earn its fourth straight victory by defeating Bemidji State University, 10-2, in non-conference baseball at the Kino Sports Complex on Tuesday night.
 
Mustang redshirt freshman Shay Endres made his first career start on the mound and was outstanding in earning the victory. He tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
 
Chase McDaniel finished with two hits, walked three times and scored a pair of runs for the Mustangs, while teammate Jaxon Haase belted a three-run homer and finished with two hits. Max Kalenberg collected three hits with Robbie Smith and Owen Latendresse each finishing with two hits. Nick Brown walked three times and also stole a pair of bases to help the SMSU offense. The Mustangs finished the game with 14 hits.
 
SMSU jumped on the board early scoring three runs in the top of the first. Smith started the game reaching via error and was followed by a four-pitch walk by McDaniel, before Haase hammered a one-strike pitch over the 403-sign in center field for his second home run of the season.
 
Following a BSU solo homer in the second, SMSU added to the lead in the fifth behind a Haase single and a run-scoring double by Kalenberg. Following a single by Latendresse put runners on the corners, Latendresse would steal second and Kalenberg would sprint home as the throw to second bounced away making the score 5-1.
 
The lead moved to 6-1 in the sixth as Smith led-off with a bunt single, moved to third on a double by McDaniel and would score on a sac fly by Latendresse.
 
The Mustangs pushed the lead to 10-1 in the seventh with four runs on five hits. Jackson Bates started the rally with a double and would score on Matt Seykora's first career base hit. Following another Smith bunt single, McDaniel drilled an opposite field double to make the score 8-1. The Mustangs added two more in the frame on a two-out throwing error by the BSU third baseman.  
 
SMSU will have Wednesday off before returning to action on Thursday to face Malone University (Ohio) at 1:30 p.m. CST.
