WINONA, Minn. –
Winona State University scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to earn a dramatic come-from-behind 17-16 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in game two of a doubleheader and earn a sweep in NSIC college baseball at Loughrey Field on Wednesday. WSU won game one by a score of 13-8.

SMSU, which had won seven of its last eight games, drops to 15-9 overall, 7-8 NSIC, while WSU is now 17-18 overall, 13-7 NSIC.

In game two, SMSU held a 12-5 advantage in the sixth inning, but WSU would rally with eight unearned runs, all with two outs, to gain a 13-12 lead. SMSU would score twice in the seventh to regain the lead only to see WSU tie the game in the eighth at 14-14.

SMSU countered once again in the ninth with two more runs to build a two-run advantage, but WSU put together another rally in the ninth on a walk and three straight one-out singles to earn the comeback victory.

SMSU walked 11 and hit one batter in the nightcap, while two Mustang errors led to nine unearned runs for the Warriors.

WSU committed four errors in game two which led to eight unearned runs, while walking seven and hitting three Mustang batters.

SMSU closed game two with 16 hits with Isaac Nett, Chase McDaniel, Brady Petron and Jaxon Haase all collecting three hits, while Owen Latendresse added two hits. Haase finished with four RBIs, including belting a three-run home run.

WSU build a 2-0 lead in the first, but SMSU would answer with a three-run fourth inning to take its first lead of the game. Brady Petron delivered a two-out single to score two runs while on the play the left fielder misplayed the hit allowing a third run to score and put the Mustangs in front at 3-2.

WSU answered back with a three-run fourth inning off SMSU starter Carter Petron to go back in front at 5-3.

The lead didn't last long as SMSU put together a huge nine-run inning with seven hits and three WSU errors to take a seven-run lead. Haase capped-off the inning with his three-run home run to build a 12-5 advantage after five.

Petron tossed five innings allowing five runs (three earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts and five walks. Logan McCray came on in relief of Petron to start the sixth and retired the first two batters he faced, but a walk and hit by batter put two runners on base. SMSU looked to be out of the inning moments later but a dropped fly ball kept the inning alive and WSU would go on to score eight runs to regain a 13-12 advantage.

SMSU would use an RBI double from Nett and a run-scoring single by Latendresse in the seventh to take a 14-13 lead. Mitchell Bouwman fired a scoreless seventh to keep the Mustangs in the lead, but the Warriors would tie the game with a walk and two hits off SMSU's Brady Brosz to tie the game at 14.

SMSU came right back in the ninth as McDaniel doubled and scored on a Haase RBI single. Pinch-runner Ryan Chmielewski would later score on a two-out RBI single by Jake Tauer to put SMSU in front at 16-14.

WSU wouldn't go away and closed the game with a one-out two-run walk-off single.

In the opener, SMSU jumped to a first inning lead behind an RBI single by Nett and a sac fly by Max Kalenberg.

SMSU starting pitcher Shay Endres struck out three WSU batters in the first, but in the second the Warriors belted a three-run home run and then a grand slam to take a 7-2 advantage. Following a hit by pitch, Kobe Lovell relieved Endres and allowed a two-run homer as the Warrior lead expanded to 9-2.

Robbie Smith hit an RBI double and scored one batter later on an RBI single by McDaniel to trim the deficit to 9-4, but WSU would use a bases loaded walk to take a 10-4 advantage after four.

SMSU mounted a rally in the sixth score four runs on three hits and brought the go-ahead run to the plate. Haase pushed across the first run with an RBI double before Nett hit a sac fly. Kalenberg would later drill a two-out two-run double to cut the deficit 10-8, but WSU used a strikeout with two runners on base to end the threat.

WSU would put the game away with three runs on just one hit in the sixth to push the margin to 13-8.

Six Mustangs pitchers combined to walk eight and hit three batters in the loss.

Haase led SMSU's 10-hit attack with three hits with McDaniel and Smith each finishing with two hits.

SMSU will continue road action this Sunday and Monday with a three-game set in Mandan, N.D., versus the University of Mary. The series is delayed one day due to expected poor weather.
