MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University baseball completed its fourth weekend three-game sweep of the season on Monday afternoon defeating Bemidji State, 6-0, at Legion Field.
SMSU, which defeated BSU 11-1 and 3-2 on Sunday in Sioux Falls, S.D., improves to 21-11 overall, 13-9 NSIC. After starting league play 0-5, the Mustangs have now won six of their last seven and 13 of their last 17 games.
Kolby Kiser (3-1) was outstanding on the mound for the Mustangs recording 10 strikeouts in seven shutout innings, while allowing one walk and five hits.
Kobe Lovell fired two shutout innings with four strikeouts to close the game.
SMSU started the scoring in the second inning as
Jake Tauer blasted his first career home run over the right field fence to stake the Mustangs to a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the fifth when SMSU was finally to break through on BSU starting pitcher Riley Bersaw. SMSU loaded the bases with no outs behind singles from
Chase McDaniel,
Jaxon Haase and
Isaac Nett. Following foul out,
Max Kalenberg smacked a two-run single to make the score 3-0.
Peyton Nash followed with a ground out to second to plate Nett and push the margin to 4-0.
In the sixth, SMSU added two more runs with
Matt Seykora reaching via a bunt single before moving to second on a single by
Caleb Gardow. McDaniel dropped in a single to center to load the bases before Haase brought home the first run with a sac fly. Nett made the score 6-0 with a fielder's choice to score Gardow.
The run support was plenty for Kiser who reached 10 strikeouts for the third time this season and lowered his ERA to 3.58.
SMSU finished the game with 10 hits as McDaniel and Haase both finished 2 for 3.
SMSU continues play at home on Wednesday with a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader versus Minnesota Duluth at Legion Field.
