WEBSTER, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University baseball team continued its winning ways on Monday afternoon holding on for a 5-4 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Northern State University at Bob Wiley Field.
The victory completes a three-game weekend sweep for SMSU and is their fifth weekend sweep of the season. SMSU improves to 25-12 overall and is fifth place in the NSIC with a 17-10 league mark. It's the 15

th time under head coach

SMSU, which held a 5-1 advantage in the eighth inning, saw NSU plate three runs in the home half of the eighth to pull within 5-4 heading into the ninth.
The Wolves (10-27, 5-21 NSIC) put the first two runners on base in the ninth, but an out on a bunt attempt and two straight fly outs ended the game and gave the Mustangs their second straight three-game sweep over the Wolves over the past two seasons.
Kolby Kiser improved to 4-1 on the season firing seven strong innings and allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Brady Brosz came on with one out in the ninth and earned his fourth save coaxing the two fly outs.
Jaxon Haase started the scoring for SMSU in the top of the first belting an opposite field solo home run for his team-leading 10
th of the season.
SMSU added to the lead in the fourth with Haase and
Chase McDaniel hitting back-to-back doubles to put a pair of runners in scoring position.
Owen Latendresse dropped in a single to right field to score the first run of the frame, before
Max Kalenberg dropped a sac bunt to plate another run. A misplay at shortstop on a ball hit by
Keenan Wenzel scored another run and pushed the margin to 4-0.
NSU scored a run in the seventh to make the score 4-1, but SMSU picked-up the run right back in the eighth behind a solo home run from McDaniel—his seventh long ball of the season.
SMSU closed the game with nine hits with Haase and McDaniel each collecting two and both scoring two runs.
SMSU continues its road trip on Tuesday with a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader at Minot State. The Mustangs close the regular season on Friday and Saturday with a three-game home series versus Minnesota Crookston at Legion Field.
