ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's swimming & diving team opened the 2023-24 season on Friday night capturing first place at the four-team Northern State Relay Meet inside the Aberdeen YMCA.
SMSU racked up 106 points to win the meet with Northern State in second place at 104 points, followed by UMary with 88 points and Concordia-St. Paul with 86 points.
The Mustangs had two relays earn first place finishes during the night. The 3x100-yard breaststroke team of
Shannon Bailey,
Ella Swanson and
Carla Nevi captured first place with a time of 3:44.53, while the 3x500-yard freestyle squad of Nevi,
Ellie Wilber and
Quincie Klein recorded a time of 16:55.29 to earn first place.
The 3x100-yard backstroke relay team of Nevi,
Heather Arlen and
Natalie Bohnert placed second with a time of 3:06.51 with the 800-yard freestyle team of Wilber, Klein,
Maija Geier and Bohnert also placing second place with a time of 8:30.24. The 400-yard freestyle relay of
Rebeca Temotio, Arlen, Klein and Geier closed the meet with a second place finish at 3:49.05 to secure the team title.
SMSU will host the Brown & Gold Intrasquad Dual on Oct. 6 before returning to regular season action on Oct. 7 hosting the University of Sioux Falls in a dual meet.
