Women's basketball wraps up conference road stint at Minnesota Crookston

THE LOOK AHEAD
• The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team (11-6, 9-2 NSIC) continues play on the road this Saturday, Jan. 20, taking on the University of Minnesota Crookston (9-7, 6-4 NSIC) inside Lysaker Gymnasium, with game time at 3:30 p.m.
• The Mustangs return to the R/A Facility on Jan. 26-27, hosting NSIC foes UMary and Northern State.
• SMSU, currently second in the NSIC standings, enters the weekend having won nine straight games and will be looking for its first 10-game winning streak since the 2001-02 season.

MINNESOTA CROOKSTON SERIES HISTORY
• SMSU and UMC will meet for the 38th time with the Mustangs leading 24-13 in a series that began in 1996-97.
• SMSU has won four of the previous five meetings, last losing to the Golden Eagles on Jan. 28, 2020.
• The Mustangs are 12-6 all-time in games played in Crookston and defeated the Golden Eagles inside Lysaker Gymnasium last season 75-58.
•SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 4-2 all-time versus UMC.

SMSU HEAD COACH TOM WEBB
Tom Webb is in his eighth season as head coach with an 88-108 record, including 66-87 in NSIC play.
• Webb is 179-231 overall in his 15th season as head coach at the Division II level after compiling a record of 91-123 in eight seasons (2008-16) as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.).
• In 2022-23, SMSU advanced to the NSIC semifinals for the fourth time in program history and first time since 2003.
• The team finished with 19 victories a season ago, tying for fifth most in program history, and highest total since 2004-05.
• SMSU also recorded a top three finish in the NSIC South last season, best in the division era, while earning a top four finish in the NSIC regular season standings for the first time since 2004-05.

MUSTANG TIP-OFF TIDBITS
• SMSU secured the program's first nine-game win streak since winning 11 of the final 12 games of the 2001-02 campaign, after defeating MSU Moorhead and Minot State in NSIC play this past weekend. The Mustangs last 10-game winning streak came in the 2001-02 season.
• SMSU pushed its win streak to eight in a row after earning a 74-61 victory over MSU Moorhead in NSIC basketball on Friday night at Nemzek Fieldhouse. Sam Wall scored a season-high 25 points and in the second quarter became the 24th player in team history to reach 1,000 career points. She made a career-high nine field goals on 15 attempts and finished the game tying a career-high with six 3-pointers. She became just the second Mustang player in team history to reach 200 career 3-pointers moving past former teammate, Sadie Stelter, who made 199.
• SMSU added another mark to the win column and extended its winning streak further with a dominant 80-42 win over Minot State in NSIC women's college basketball on Saturday evening.
Sam Wall scored a game-high 20 points with six 3-pointers. It marked back-to-back 20-point games for the senior as she added two rebounds and two assists in the win. Madison Gehloff tallied 16 points on 6 of 11 shooting with six rebounds and three assists. Peyton Blandin and Audrey Swanson went a combined 8 of 12 from the field in adding 22 points for the Mustangs.
• SMSU continued its recent hot-shooting finishing the game shooting 47 percent (27 of 58) from the field including 16 of 36 from 3-point land.
• SMSU has shot 50 percent or higher five times this season.
• SMSU dished out a season-high 22 assists in victories over Martin Luther and Minot State.
Sam Wall became the 24th player in team history to reach 1,000 career points in the win over MSU Moorhead and ranks second in team history with 207 3-pointers.
• Stoltzman ranks fourth in team history in field goal pct. (51.0, 299 of 586).
• In NSIC games only, Stoltzman ranks fourth in the league in scoring (18.0), seventh in field goal pct. (44.7), 12th in free throw pct. (70.9), 12th in rebounding (6.5), and fifth in assists (3.1). Wall leads the NSIC in 3-point field goals per game (2.7) and 3-point field goal pct. (39.5).
 
MUSTANGS BY THE NUMBERS
• For the season, SMSU has two players averaging double figures in scoring, and five averaging over eight points per game. Junior Bri Stoltzman leads the way at 18.4 ppg while leading the team in both rebounding at 6.7 per game and assists with 55.
• Senior Sam Wall is averaging 12.9 ppg and shooting 89 percent from the foul line. She leads the team with 44 3-pointers.
• Senior Madison Gehloff is scoring 9.8 ppg and is second on the team with 36 free throws made.
• Junior Peyton Blandin ranks second on the team with 33 3-pointers and is averaging 9.1 ppg with senior Hannah Parsley averaging 8.5 ppg.
• SMSU is shooting 43 percent from the field, 36 percent from 3-point range, 76 percent from the free throw line and is plus-2.9 in rebound margin. The Mustangs are averaging 75 points per game, while opponents are averaging 67 ppg.
 
SMSU IN THE NCAA STATS  
• In the latest Division II national statistics (Jan. 15), SMSU ranks fifth in 3-pointers per game (9.5), 7th in 3-point field goals attempts (26.5), 32nd in scoring offense (75.2), 41st in free throw pct. (75.7) and 31st in turnovers per game (14.0).
Bri Stoltzman ranks 14th in field goals (113), 32nd scoring (18.4) and 56th in free throws made (62).
Sam Wall ranks 13th in 3-point field goals made (44) and 19th in 3-point field goal attempts (115).

STONE COLD STOLTZMAN
Bri Stoltzman recorded a career-high 36 points on 13 of 23 shooting in a loss to Northwest Missouri State on Nov. 10. She recorded her second 30-point game of her career with 31 points on 9 of 18 shooting in the win over No. 19 Minnesota Duluth on Dec. 9.
• Stoltzman is leading the team in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and free throws made.
 
KEEP THE WALL ROLLING
Sam Wall set the program record for 3-pointers made in a single-season last season with 77.
• Wall ranks second all-time in 3-pointers made in program history with 207 in 115 games. She is 44 away from moving into first all-time and passing Jenna Borchers (2018-23).
• She also ranks fifth in free throw percentage at .825 (146 of 177) and is fifth in 3-point field goal percentage at .386 (207 of 536).
 
PEYTON BLANDIN NOTES
• Has started every game and is averaging 9.1 ppg, 2.7 rpg, and is second on the team in 3-pointers with 33.
• Scored a career-high 17 points vs. Northwest Missouri State (11/10/23).
 
KENNADI BUCHHOLZ NOTES
• Has played in 12 games and is averaging 2.5 ppg and 1.8 rpg.
• Scored season-high six points vs. Bethany (11/27/23) and Martin Luther (1/2/24).
• Season-high nine rebounds vs. Martin Luther (1/2/24).
• Recorded her first double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 13 rebounds last season vs. Crown College (11/15/22).

• SMSU is 7-2 at home this season after finishing 11-4 at home in 2022-23 and 10-3 in 2021-22.

SMSU ALL-TIME IN THE NSIC
• The 2023-24 campaign marks the 45th season SMSU has competed in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
• SMSU has an all-time record of 288-421 in conference games and have won four regular season championships (1979-80, 1980-81, 2000-01, 2001-02) and one NSIC Tournament championship (2002).
 
MUSTANG HISTORY
• Southwest Minnesota State is in its 55th season of women's basketball in 2023-24.
• SMSU has played 1,374 games compiling an all-time record of 662-712.
• SMSU has recorded 28 winning seasons, including the last three seasons. The 2019-20 squad that finished 16-12 was the program's first winning season since 2009-10.
