SMSU holds off UMC to leap back into win column

CROOKSTON, Minn. – Dunwa Omot scored a team-high 16 points to pace Southwest Minnesota State to a 77-67 victory over Minnesota Crookston in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball on Friday night at the Lysaker Gymnasium.

UMC (5-13, 2-10 NSIC) held a six-point lead in the first half, but SMSU (10-8, 7-5 NSIC) tied the game 32-32 in the opening minute of the second half and made enough plays down the stretch to seal the victory.

SMSU, which snapped its two-game losing streak to UMC, now holds a 32-3 series advantage since UMC joined the conference in 1999-2000.

The Mustangs had three players reach double-figure scoring, including Jake Phipps who poured in 13 points while pulling down six rebounds. Mason Lund scored 10 points with a team-high three blocks, while Kyle Luedtke, Cliff Cofield, Aeron Stevens, and Jakob Braaten all chipped in nine points apiece.

UMC's Blaize Sagna scored a game-high 30 points on 12 of 18 shooting while pulling down three rebounds and dishing two assists.

SMSU closed the game shooting 45 percent (25 of 55), while making 8 of 23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles held the 32-26 rebound advantage.

UMC shot 48 percent (23 of 48) from the field, which included 7 of 17 from behind the 3-point arc.

The Mustangs built an early 13-7 lead with 14:56 remaining in the opening half. Following the first media timeout, the Golden Eagles held SMSU scoreless for the next five minutes in building in a 14-0 run to bring the score to 21-13 in favor of UMC with just over nine minutes left in the half.

SMSU then went on an impressive 17-11 run during the next eight minutes, connecting on 6 of 11 field goals, with two 3-pointers, to close the half down 32-30.

SMSU shot 36 percent (11 of 31) in the opening half, including 4 of 14 from 3-point range. The Mustang defense forced the Golden Eagles into eight turnovers in the half.

Jake Phipps would tie the game at 32-32 early in the second half, and SMSU never looked back in holding the lead for the remainder of the game.

UMC would continue to push and eventually made the score 51-46 with 8:31 remaining, but back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers for the Mustangs extended the margin to 60-49. Jake Phipps and Jakob Braaten traded points down the stretch to eventually force UMC to foul to close the game.
