MARSHALL, Minn. -- The Southwest Minnesota State University men's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and outstanding defense to earn an 80-46 victory over Northern State on Saturday night inside the R/A Facility on Tropical Night.
SMSU earned its second straight blowout victory with four players reaching double figures in scoring, while limiting NSU to 30 percent shooting and just 20 points in the second half.
The 34-point victory for the Mustangs was their largest ever over the Wolves in 101 all-time meetings. SMSU has now won two straight over NSU for the first time since winning three in a row from 2012-14.
The Mustangs are now 12-8 overall and sit in fifth place in the NSIC with a 9-5 league mark.
Mason Lund tied a season-high with 15 points on 5 of 7 shooting with three 3-pointers to help pace the Mustangs, while
Jake Phipps added 15 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Dunwa Omot closed with 13 points, all in the second half, with teammate
Aeron Stevens chipping in with 12 points.
SMSU shot a solid 53 percent (31 of 59) from the field, including 9 of 19 from 3-point range. SMSU also held a 40-18 scoring advantage in points in the paint and outrebounded NSU 38-30.

Jakob Braaten had a strong game off the bench for the Mustangs scoring five points with a career-high six assists, three steals and three rebounds.
Mekhi Shaw racked up a career-high five steals, while scoring seven points.
Cliff Cofield also was solid, pulling down seven rebounds with four assists, three steals and six points.
NSU, which drops to 7-13 overall, 5-9 NSIC, was led by Josh Dilling's 10 points. Dilling entered the game averaging 19 points per game, while NSU's leading scorer on the season, Jackson Moni, was held to just six points, after entering the game scoring 21 points per contest.

NSU finished the game shooting 30 percent (16 of 54) from the field, while making just 6 of 30 from 3-point range.

SMSU dominated from the start, jumping out to a 15-4 lead in the first six minutes with Lund scoring seven points.

Lund would later complete a three-point play to extend the margin to 37-23 at the 5:34. The Mustangs would continue their hot shooting late into the half with
Kyle Luedtke drilling a 3-pointer with 55 seconds left in the half to give SMSU a 43-26 halftime advantage.

SMSU put the game away early in the second half with Omot heating up with a pair of 3-pointers in the opening two and a half minutes as the Mustangs used a 9-1 run in the first five minutes of the half. NSU didn't score its first field goal of the second half until the 14:48 mark.

SMSU would push the lead to 61-31 at the 12:47 mark following five straight points by Omot and a dunk by Stevens.

SMSU will now turn its focus to next Friday, Feb. 2, when it hosts NSIC leading Minnesota State (19-1, 13-1 NSIC) with game time slated for 7:30 p.m.
