MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team brought the heat on Tropical Night inside the R/A Facility, defeating Northern State 73-53 in NSIC women's basketball on Saturday night.
SMSU is now 13-7 overall and 11-3 in the NSIC had five players score in double figures for just the second time this season.
Bri Stoltzman found her groove tonight posting a game-high 18 points on 7 of 12 shooting while pulling down seven rebounds and snatching two steals.
Hannah Parsley and
Madison Gehloff chipped in 12 points apiece, with Parsley shooting 5 of 10 from the field and Gehloff making 4 of 7.
Sam Wall and
Peyton Blandin combined for 22 points on 8 of 23 shooting, while Blandin made a team-high three 3-pointers.
The Mustangs finished the game shooting 48 percent (28 of 59) from the field including 35 percent from deep (8 of 23).
Northern State drops to 15-5 overall and 11-3 in the NSIC. The Wolves were led by Brynn Alfson who tallied 18 points with 11 rebounds and one block. NSU closed the night shooting 34 percent (20 of 59) from the field with one make from deep.
Hannah Parsley got the Mustangs started with a right-handed layup to kick off a 5-2 run to begin the game. The Wolves forced the Mustangs to 3 of 10 shooting in the next seven minutes building an 8-8 run to push the score to 13-10 in favor of SMSU to end the quarter.
SMSU kicked off the second quarter with a 9-5 run backed by scores from Stoltzman and Blandin to settle the score at 22-15 with five minutes left in the half. Following the media timeout, Stoltzman would go on a tear, scoring seven of the next 11 SMSU points including an and-one to seal the half at a score of 33-24.
Both teams scored buckets in quick succession to open the final 20 minutes.
Hannah Parsley gained momentum for the Mustangs by drilling a 3-pointer off a beautiful dish by
Bri Stoltzman. Shortly after, Brynn Alfson aided a 8-6 run for the Wolves with just over three minutes left in the quarter. SMSU forced NSU to go nearly scoreless in the final minutes of the third, limiting the Wolves to just two points at the free throw line.
Madison Gehloff scored five of the final nine Mustang points in the quarter to push the lead to 55-38.
A fast Gehloff layup gave SMSU the momentum advantage to start the fourth quarter. The Wolves gained back the momentum with ease, scoring the next four points in succession. However, the Mustangs would not go away, using
Hannah Parsley as the backbone of the offense to propel themselves to victory.
