COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team split four games this past weekend at the University of Missouri.
SMSU opened play on Friday with an 82-45 win over Edinboro (Pa.), before suffering a 73-53 loss on Friday night to the University of Illinois. On Saturday, SMSU picked-up a 61-44 win over the University of Missouri, before closing with a hard-fought 75-71 setback to Illinois
SMSU is now 15-5 on the season and will have several weeks before returning to action on March 1-2 at the University of Arizona Tournament. SMSU will conclude the season on March 14-16 hosting the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament inside the R/A Facility and PE Gym.
In the victory over Edinboro,
Emmanuel Fuentes Cervantes scored 32 points on 16 of 21 shooting with 14 rebounds and 11 assists. Josh Brown added 18 points with
Fermin Wingerter chipping in with 15 points.
Genaro Perez (7),
Alex Wells (6) and
Landon Kruse (2) all scored in the winning effort.
In the loss to Illinois on Friday, Brown led the Mustangs with 21 points on 10 of 15 shooting with 10 rebounds. Fuentes grabbed 14 rebounds and scored 15 points.
In Saturday's bounce back win over Missouri, Wingerter poured in a game-high 20 points on 10 of 18 shooting with five assists. Fuentes (18) and Brown (17) both finished in double figure scoring in the victory.
In the final game setback to Illinois, Fuentes made 12 of 23 field goals to pour in a team-high 26 points. Brown scored 22 points on 10 of 14 shooting with Wingerter adding 10 points. Kruse scored six points with Perez closing with five points.
