Mustangs host No. 22 Minnesota State and Winona State for weekend NSIC matchups

THE LOOK AHEAD
• The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team (13-7, 11-3 NSIC), currently tied for second in the NSIC standings, wraps up its four-game home stand with games this week against No. 22 Minnesota State (17-4, 14-1 NSIC) and Winona State (5-15, 4-11 NSIC).
• Following this weekend, the Mustangs will play their next four games on the road and will return to the R/A Facility for their final two regular season games against Minot State and MSU Moorhead on Feb. 23-24.
• A preview for MSU and WSU can be found on page 3.

MINNESOTA STATE SERIES HISTORY
• SMSU and MSU will meet for the 72nd time with the Mavericks leading 48-23 in a series that began in 1970-71.
• SMSU fell to MSU in Mankato earlier this season 78-50, and has not beaten MSU since Dec. 17, 2022.
• The Mustangs are 13-16 all-time in games played in Marshall, but have defeated the Mavericks in four of the previous five meetings in the R/A Facility.
• SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 6-10 all-time versus MSU.

WINONA STATE SERIES HISTORY
• SMSU and WSU will meet for the 91st time with the Mustangs leading 47-43 in a series that began in 1973-74.
• Winona State defeated SMSU earlier season in Winona 76-61, and has defeated the Mustangs in two of the four previous meetings.
• The Mustangs are 30-14 all-time in games played in Marshall and last suffered a loss to WSU in the R/A Facility on Jan. 24, 2020.
• SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 3-10 all-time versus WSU.

SMSU HEAD COACH TOM WEBB
Tom Webb is in his eighth season as head coach at SMSU with an 90-109 record, including 68-88 in NSIC play.
• Webb is 181-232 overall in his 16th season as head coach at the Division II level after compiling a record of 91-123 in eight seasons (2008-16) as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.).
• In 2022-23, SMSU advanced to the NSIC semifinals for the fourth time in program history and first time since 2003.
• The team finished with 19 victories a season ago, tying for fifth most in program history, and highest total since 2004-05.
• SMSU also recorded a top three finish in the NSIC South last season, best in the division era, while earning a top four finish in the NSIC regular season standings for the first time since 2004-05.

MUSTANG TIP-OFF TIDBITS
• SMSU, which was on its longest winning streak in over 20 years, had its streak snapped on Friday by UMary.
• Lexie Schneider totaled a career-high 37 points to power UMary to victory over SMSU by a score of 83-72 on Friday night inside the R/A Facility.
Hannah Parsley tied a career-high 19 points on 6 of 9 shooting, while pulling down five rebounds and snatching four steals. Peyton Blandin aided Parsley with 13 points on 5 of 13 shooting with five rebounds and two assists, while Madison Gehloff added 12 points, four rebounds, and one steal.
• SMSU brought the heat on Tropical Night inside the R/A Facility, defeating Northern State 73-53 on Saturday night.
• The Mustangs had five players score in double figures for just the second time this season. Bri Stoltzman found her groove tonight posting a game-high 18 points on 7 of 12 shooting while pulling down seven rebounds and snatching two steals. Hannah Parsley and Madison Gehloff chipped in 12 points apiece, with Parsley shooting 5 of 10 from the field and Gehloff making 4 of 7. Sam Wall and Peyton Blandin combined for 22 points on 8 of 23 shooting, while Blandin made a team-high three 3-pointers.
• The Mustangs finished the game shooting 48 percent (28 of 59) from the field including 35 percent from deep (8 of 23).
• SMSU has shot 50 percent or higher six times this season.
• SMSU dished out a season-high 22 assists in victories over Martin Luther and Minot State.
Sam Wall became the 24th player in team history to reach 1,000 career points on Jan. 12 and ranks second in team history with 212 3-pointers.
• Stoltzman ranks fourth in team history in field goal pct. (50.5, 313 of 620).
• In NSIC games only, Stoltzman ranks fourth in the league in scoring (16.9), seventh in field goal pct. (44.0), 11th in free throw pct. (71.0), 12th in rebounding (6.4), and fifth in assists (3.2).
•  Wall leads the NSIC in 3-point field goals per game (2.5) and 3-point field goal pct. (35.7), and is 13th amongst active players across Division II in career 3-pointers made.
 
MUSTANGS BY THE NUMBERS
• For the season, SMSU has three players averaging double figures in scoring, and five averaging over nine points per game. Junior Bri Stoltzman leads the way at 17.6 ppg while leading the team in both rebounding at 6.6 per game and assists with 66.
• Senior Sam Wall is averaging 12.8 ppg and shooting 84 percent from the foul line. She leads the team with 49 3-pointers.
• Senior Madison Gehloff is scoring 10.4 ppg and is second on the team with 42 free throws made.
• Junior Peyton Blandin ranks second on the team with 41 3-pointers and is averaging 9.5 ppg with senior Hannah Parsley averaging 9.7 ppg, while snatching a team-second 35 steals.
• SMSU is shooting 44 percent from the field, 35 percent from 3-point range, 76 percent from the free throw line and is plus-2.8 in rebound margin. The Mustangs are averaging 76 points per game, while opponents are averaging 66 ppg.
 
SMSU IN THE NCAA STATS  
• In the latest Division II national statistics (Jan. 29), SMSU ranks sixth in 3-pointers per game (9.3), seventh in 3-point field goals attempts (26.5), 17th in scoring offense (76.2), 34th in free throw pct. (75.9) and 19th in turnovers per game (13.4).
Bri Stoltzman ranks 24th in field goals made (127), 42nd in scoring (17.6) and 76th in free throws made (72).
Sam Wall ranks 24th in 3-point field goals made (49) and 26th in 3-point field goal attempts (137).

STONE COLD STOLTZMAN
Bri Stoltzman recorded a career-high 36 points on 13 of 23 shooting in a loss to Northwest Missouri State on Nov. 10. She recorded her second 30-point game of her career with 31 points on 9 of 18 shooting in the win over No. 19 Minnesota Duluth on Dec. 9.
• Stoltzman is leading the team in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and free throws made.
 
KEEP THE WALL ROLLING
Sam Wall set the program record for 3-pointers made in a single-season last season with 77.
• Wall ranks second all-time in 3-pointers made in program history with 212 in 118 games. She is 39 away from moving into first all-time and passing Jenna Borchers (2018-23).
• She also ranks sixth in free throw percentage at .818 (148 of 181) and is sixth in 3-point field goal percentage at .380 (212 of 558).
 
PEYTON BLANDIN NOTES
• Has started every game and is averaging 9.5 ppg, 3.3 rpg, and is second on the team in 3-pointers with 41.
• Scored a career-high 17 points vs. Northwest Missouri State (11/10/23).
 
KENNADI BUCHHOLZ NOTES
• Has played in 14 games and is averaging 2.7 ppg and 1.9 rpg.
• Scored season-high eight points at Minnesota Crookston (1/20/24).
• Season-high nine rebounds vs. Martin Luther (1/2/24).
• Recorded her first double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 13 rebounds last season vs. Crown College (11/15/22).
 
BRYNN BUSSE NOTES
• Has played in 17 games adding 26 points, 17 rebounds, and 11 assists.
• Scored seven points on three field goals vs. Martin Luther (1/2/24).
 
ZOIE CENTERS NOTES
• Has played in 12 games and scored a season-high three points vs. Sioux Falls (12/14/23).
• Tallied seven points, nine rebounds, and five assists in 18 games last season.
 
MADISON GEHLOFF NOTES
• Has started every game and is averaging 10.4 ppg and 5.1 rpg.
• Scored season-high 18 points at Winona State (12/1/23) and Minnesota Crookston (1/20/24).

• SMSU is 8-3 at home this season after finishing 11-4 at home in 2022-23 and 10-3 in 2021-22.

SMSU ALL-TIME IN THE NSIC
• The 2023-24 campaign marks the 45th season SMSU has competed in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
• SMSU has an all-time record of 290-422 in conference games and have won four regular season championships (1979-80, 1980-81, 2000-01, 2001-02) and one NSIC Tournament championship (2002).
 
MUSTANG HISTORY
• Southwest Minnesota State is in its 55th season of women's basketball in 2023-24.
• SMSU has played 1,377 games compiling an all-time record of 664-713.
• SMSU has recorded 28 winning seasons, including the last three seasons. The 2019-20 squad that finished 16-12 was the program's first winning season since 2009-10.

• Destinee Bursch is second on the team with 14.3 ppg and leads the squad in assists with 62.
• Natalie Bremer is scoring 14.1 ppg and leads the team with 62 free throws made.
• MSU is shooting 40 percent from the field, 25 percent from 3-point range, 72 percent from the free throw line and is plus-2.9 in rebound margin. The Mavericks are averaging 78 points per game, while opponents are averaging 60 ppg.
 
WINONA STATE NOTES

• WSU last played on Jan. 30 suffering a 59-57 road loss to Concordia-St. Paul and will play Sioux Falls on Feb. 2 before visiting SMSU later this week.
• Olivia Gamoke leads the team in scoring at 9.4 ppg with a team-high 29 assists.
• Emma Carpenter is tied for second on the team with 8.1 ppg and leads the team in 3-pointers with 27.
• Alex Dornfeld is scoring 8.1 ppg and is leading the squad in rebounding at 7.3 rpg.
• WSU is shooting 37 percent from the field, 26 percent from 3-point range, 66 percent from the free throw line and is minus-1.9 in rebound margin. The Warriors are averaging 56 points per game, while opponents are averaging 64 ppg.
