Mustangs use fast-paced first half to push past Beavers

MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team used a fast-paced first half to outlast Bemidji State 86-72 in NSIC women's college basketball on Friday night inside the R/A Facility.

As a result, SMSU jumps to 8-6 overall and 6-2 in NSIC play. BSU drops to 3-8 overall and 0-7 in the conference.

The Mustangs were led by junior Bri Stoltzman who posted her seventh 20-point scoring performance of her career, with 25 points on 7 of 17 shooting and a perfect 10 of 10 from the foul line. Stoltzman added seven rebounds and dished five assists in addition. Peyton Blandin scored 13 points in the affair on 5 of 11 shooting with three makes from deep. 

The first 20 points of the game were traded evenly between the teams. SMSU used an 8-0 run backed by Wagner layups and Hannah Parsley free throws to push the score to 18-11 with just three minutes remaining. Wagner scored two more baskets in retaliation to the Beavers' scoring ending the quarter at 24-15 in favor of SMSU.

SMSU closed the night shooting 46 percent (31 of 68) from the field including seven makes from beyond the arc. Bemidji State shot 49 percent (28 of 57) on the evening with just one make from deep.

Sam Wall scored seven of the first nine points of the second quarter to push the SMSU lead to 31-17 with just over eight minutes remaining in the half. BSU would not go away easily, forcing a 14-9 run in opposition on the Mustangs to cut the lead to 13 points with only two minutes to go in the half. The Mustangs closed the half on an 8-2 run backed by Wall 3-pointers to move into the final 20 minutes with a 51-35 advantage.

Alyssa Hill led the Beavers tonight, scoring 16 points on a perfect 8 of 8 from the field with four rebounds. Sam Pogatchnik finished closely behind Hill with 15 points in the game, five rebounds, and two assists. 

Elizabeth Wagner had another big game for the Mustangs, shooting a perfect 6 of 6 from the field for 12 points with five rebounds and two steals.

The Beavers held SMSU to just 22 percent shooting in the third quarter while shooting 44 percent on their end. BSU took advantage of five different players scoring the ball in quarter three to build an 18-10 run and close the gap to nine points going into the final quarter of play. 

The Mustangs opened the final leg with an 8-2 run to build the lead back up to 14 points. BSU would not go down without a fight, scoring nine of the next 12 points to cut SMSU's advantage down to eight at 72-64. A clutch and one layup from Maddie Thorfinnson with only two minutes left catapulted the Mustangs over the Beavers, forcing BSU to foul for the remainder of play.

The Mustangs host St. Cloud State (7-4, 4-3 NSIC) tomorrow afternoon, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m., in the R/A Facility.
