Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Warriors’ late-game goal gives WSU the edge over SMSU

WINONA, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team fell to Winona State 2-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Sunday afternoon.  

WSU improves to 5-5-1 overall, including 4-5 NSIC, while SMSU falls to 1-11-1 overall, 1-7-1 NSIC. 

The Mustangs recorded six shots with two being on net. Emma Dahnert scored the lone goal for the Mustangs in the 42nd minute of the first half from a cross by Selena Prolic. Trinity Reagan also recorded one shot on goal for SMSU.  

The Warriors posted 11 shots with nine shots on goal. Leading the Warriors offense was Kyleigh Jannisch, tallying two shots on goal and recording the game winning goal. Also supporting the WSU offense was Johanna Shubert recording one goal and one assist. 

In the loss, Rachel Hicks faced nine shots on goal while saving seven shots and allowing two goals.  

The WSU goalkeeper, Alyson Jumper encountered two shots on goal while saving one shot and allowing one goal.  

The Warriors took the lead early in the first half with a goal by Johanna Shubert.  

The Mustangs would respond with three minutes remaining in the first half from a perfectly placed cross by Selena Prolic to find the head of Emma Dahnert to put the ball in the back of the net. Dahnert would score her first collegiate goal to tie the game 1-1 going into halftime.  

Leading into halftime, the Warriors outshot the Mustangs by four shots on goal.  

The second half was quiet until the Warriors retook the lead from a cross by Shubert to find Kyleigh Jannisch on the back post to make the score 2-1.  

The Warriors defense would hold the Mustangs to just three shots and one shot on goal in the second half.  

The Mustangs are back in action next weekend for their last two home games of the regular season with a match up against St. Cloud State on Friday, Oct. 25 with kickoff set for 5 p.m.
