CROOKSTON, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team net two to secure its first win in conference play over Minnesota Crookston on Friday evening.
The Mustangs improve to 1-6-1 overall, 1-2-1 NSIC while the Golden Eagles drop to 1-6-1 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
SMSU posted 17 shots with 11 being on net.
Haley Mason and
Kylie Peters led the Mustangs offense, both tallying one goal apiece.
Dare Kroeten supported the offense with one assist and two shots on goal.
Trinity Reagan posted three shots on goal, while
Brooke Wetterstrom had two shots on net.
UMC tallied 21 shots with 12 being on goal. Julia Finch led the Golden Eagles offense recording three shots on goal.
In the victory,
Rachel Hicks faced 12 shots on net, saving all 12 shots en route to earning her sixth career shutout.
In the loss, Jordan Metz faced 11 shots on goal, tallying nine saves while allowing two goals.
The Mustangs offense got into a groove early in the game.
Haley Mason netted her second goal of the season in the first seven minutes when she received the ball and turned on the defender causing them to lose balance, penetrating the defense to put the ball in the back of the net to give the Mustangs 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles offense didn't give up after the Mustangs scored, in fact they posted seven shots on goal forcing
Rachel Hicks to keep the shutout for SMSU going into halftime. The Golden Eagles out-shot the Mustangs in the first half, tallying 13 shots with seven being on net.
The second half was quiet with both sides equally tallying shots throughout until the Mustangs earned a free kick.
Dare Kroeten placed a perfect ball to the back post where
Kylie Peters netted her first career goal for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs continue NSIC action on the road with a match up against Bemidji State on Sunday, Oct. 6, with kick off slated for 1 p.m.
