SMSU soccer late game heroics fall short against Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team late offensive push was not enough to outlast Bemidji State which resulted in a 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon.

SMSU drops to 1-7-1, 1-3-1 NSIC and BSU improves to 6-3 and 4-1 in conference play.

The Mustangs tallied 15 shots with nine shots on net. Malorie Maderak led the Mustang offense with one goal. Brooke Wetterstrom, Sophia Sonnek, and Tessa Borwick also supported the offense with each recording two shots on goal. Haley Mason and Laney Brill each tallied one shot on goal.

The Beavers posted 19 shots with 12 shots on goal. Katrina Barthelt and Grace Kittel each tallied one goal to lead the Beavers offense to victory. Maria Stocke also supported the offense with four shots on goal.

In the loss, Rachel Hicks faced 12 shots on goal while saving 10 shots and allowing two goals.

The BSU goalkeeper, Rozlyn Buettner encountered four shots on goal while saving two shots in the first half. BSU subbed their goalkeeper after halftime, putting in Sonia Alfieri. Alfieri faced seven shots with six saves and allowed one goal.

The Beavers maintained most of the possession in the first half recording three shots on goal, but Rachel Hicks continued to stand strong in net for the Mustangs to keep the score at 0-0 going into halftime.

The Beavers earned a free kick early in the second half, which would lead to Katrina Barthelt finding the back of the net to give BSU a 1-0 lead over the Mustangs.

BSU offense continued to be a problem for the Mustangs after the Beavers netted a second goal in the 71st minute.
The Mustangs offense saw a bit of life in the 80th minute when Malorie Maderak secured her first collegiate goal, when she got the ball on top of the Beavers box and struck a left-footed volley which banked off the post and into the goal.

The Mustangs continued to put pressure on BSU's defense and added two more shots on goal but with no luck the time ran out.

The Mustangs return home next Friday, Oct. 11 with a match up against No. 13 Minnesota State with kickoff set for 3 p.m.
