Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Two goals a minute apart boosts SMSU to win over MSUM

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team netted two goals in just over a minute to earn a 3-1 victory over MSU Moorhead in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Friday afternoon. 

SMSU improves to 2-12-2 overall, 2-8-2 NSIC, while MSU Moorhead drops to 1-13-2 overall including 1-10-1 in NSIC. 

The Mustangs recorded 23 shots with nine being on net. Malorie Maderak, Haley Mason, and Jada Backes each tallied one goal apiece and combined for eight shots on goal. Dare Kroeten and Hannah Walburg both recorded one assist for the Mustangs. 

The Dragons tallied 14 shots with five being on goal. Lilly Johnson led the MSUM offense with the Dragons' lone goal of the match.  

SMSU goalkeeper, Stella Litzen faced five shots on goal while recording four saves en route to earning her first collegiate victory.  

MSUM goalkeeper, Rylee Truslow encountered nine shots on goal while recording six saves and allowing three goals.  

The first half saw equal chances from both teams but neither were able to find the back of the net, resulting in a 0-0 tie going into halftime. 

The Dragons would open the scoring in the 68th minute from a goal by Lilly Johnson. 

The Mustangs would tie the game off a free kick taken by Dare Kroeten, who found Malorie Maderak in the box to net her third goal of the season in the 73rd minute. 
 
The Mustangs did not stop there, Hannah Walburg would place a perfect through ball to Haley Mason who would then find the back of the net in the 89th minute to take the lead 2-1.
 
SMSU would close out the game with another goal by Jada Backes, her first collegiate goal, in the 90th minute to extend its lead to 3-1.
 

The Mustangs continue NSIC action on the road with a match against Northern State on Sunday, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
