No. 10 Mustangs take down Cougars on Senior Day

MARSHALL, Minn. – The tenth-ranked Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team broke its losing streak at home with a 16-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 win over Sioux Falls in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, SMSU improves to 19-4 in the year and 10-4 in NSIC play. USF drops to 12-10 overall and 7-7 in the conference.

SMSU was led by a trio of hitters who registered double-digit kills. Emma VanHeel led the attack with 15 kills on .323 hitting, putting up a pair of solo blocks in the process. Ashley Peltier followed with 13 kills on .370 hitting and three block assists, while Saari Kuehl swung for 10 kills.

Sydney Thein supported the attack with 50 set assists and helped defensively with 11 digs, good enough for a double-double.

McKenzie Tolk was the anchor for the Mustangs on the back line, tallying 18 digs and an ace while recording three assists. Leah Jones added 12 digs.

USF was led offensively by Sadie Voss, who batted down 19 kills on .341 hitting. Voss added 10 digs for a double-double while libero Faith Van Eck added a match-high 19 digs.

The Cougars dominated the first set hitting nearly 40 percent with 18 kills. USF jumped out to an 11-4 lead using kills from five separate attackers. SMSU would battle back to decrease the margin to five at 19-14, but the effort would be too little. The Cougars scored six of the last seven points to win the set 25-16.

USF again led by four early on but an SMSU run that took advantage of three Cougar errors and kills from Kuehl, VanHeel, and Peltier to take a four-point lead at 13-9. SMSU kept the lead for the remainder of the set to win 25-22.

The Cougars moved out to a 12-9 lead in set three until SMSU scored the next four points to reclaim the lead at 13-12. The teams battled back and forth until an SMSU lead at 20-17. The Cougars then made the Mustangs burn both timeouts by scoring the next five points to put the pressure on with a 22-20 lead. The Mustangs sought the win more out of the timeout, scoring the next five points to take set three.

SMSU led 6-1 straight away until USF nearly knotted up the score at 7-6. The Mustangs held on through the remainder of set four to come away with the win.

The Mustangs continue play at home next weekend with matches versus Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State.
