Mustangs move to 4-0 with road win over Eagles; Coach Webb records 100th win at SMSU

CHADRON, Neb. – Bri Stoltzman scored 27 points, while Audrey Swanson added a career-high 23 points to pace the Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team to a 93-72 non-conference road victory over Chadron State on Wednesday night inside the Chicoine Center.
 
Tonight also marked the 100th career victory at SMSU for head coach Tom Webb.
 
SMSU moves to 4-0 on the season, while CSC drops to 0-4 overall.
 
SMSU's 4-0 start is the programs first since the shortened COVID season in 2021. The last time SMSU won its first four games during a full season occurred in 2004-05 when the squad won its first seven games.
 
Stoltzman finished the game connecting on 11 of 18 field goals, while also grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds for her ninth career double-double. It's also the 16th 20-point game in her career. Swanson made 11 of 17 shots and recorded eight rebounds. Peyton Blandin also had strong game for the Mustangs tying a season and career-high with 17 points.
 
SMSU shot a blistering 54 percent (36 of 67) from the field despite making just 4 of 21 from 3-point range. The Mustangs also outrebounded the Eagles by a 42-32 advantage.
 
CSC, members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, closed the game shooting 37 percent (24 of 65). Kyra Tanabe led the Eagles with a team-high 19 points on 7 of 14 shooting.
 
SMSU held a 14-13 advantage in the opening five minutes of the game before using an 11-0 run to blow the game open. Blandin started the run with a field goal before Brylee Iverson connected on a 3-pointer. Stoltzman added two field goals sandwiched around a Swanson layup as the Mustangs pushed the lead to 25-13 late in the first quarter.
 
SMSU opened the second quarter on an 11-2 run to build its largest lead of the half at 38-19 with 5:52 remaining. CSC however would counter with a big 13-2 run to trim the deficit to 40-32 with just over three minutes left in the half. Swanson would answer for SMSU with three straight field goals to push the margin back to double digits for the Mustangs settled for a 46-37 halftime lead.
 
The Mustangs put the game away early in the second half storming out of the break scoring the first 12 points with Blandin and Stoltzman each scoring four points to extend the margin to 58-37.
 
SMSU concludes the trip on Friday with a 7 p.m. CST match-up at Black Hills State (S.D.) in Spearfish, S.D. The Yellow Jackets, also a member of the RMAC, are 3-2 overall and host Minnesota Crookston on Thursday night.
