WINONA, Minn. – Four Mustangs scored in double figures to help pace the Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball team to a 2-0 weekend with a 75-62 victory over Winona State University on Saturday evening inside McCown Gymnasium.
SMSU, which beat the defending NCAA champion on Friday, improves to 9-2 overall and 4-1 NSIC. WSU drops to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
Mason Lund led the Mustang offense with a career-high 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting, grabbed team-high eight rebounds.
Aeron Stevens added 17 points on 5 of 9 shooting, tallied three 3-pointers and recorded a pair of assists.
Dunwa Omot and
Steven Kramer both tallied 14 points apiece. Omot finished the night shooting 4 of 9, and Kramer ended the game 4 of 10 shooting and recorded a team-high three steals.
The Mustangs finished the game shooting 42 percent (24 of 57) from the field, 38 percent (13 of 34) from downtown including 82 percent (14 of 17) from the free throw line.
WSU finished the day shooting 32 percent (20 of 61) from the field, and 28 percent (9 of 32) from beyond the arch. Jhei-R Jones and Connor Drew led the Warriors with 15 points apiece, with Jones shooting 6 of 13 and Drew ended the game 5 of 11 shooting.
The first four minutes of the game were quiet with neither team scoring a basketball until the Warriors made a 3-pointer at 17:46 and a pair of free throws at 16:02 to lead 5-0. SMSU would finally get its first shot to fall at 15:35 with
Steven Kramer connecting on a 3-pointer.
WSU countered with three 3-pointers in two minutes to increase its lead to eight points with 13 minutes to go in the first half. SMSU kicked it into gear over the following eight minutes, pursuing a 20-5 run backed by scores from Stevens,
Mekhi Shaw, Kramer, Omot, and Lund. The last 15 points of the half would be traded almost evenly, with WSU holding an 8-7 run to close the half.
SMSU led by six after the first 20 minutes.
Lund made a jumper to open the second half before the Warriors made back-to-back jumpers to make it a one possession game. The Mustangs followed up the scores with a 10-2 run until WSU came back with a 12-2 run of its own to shrink the gap to one point.
Mason Lund would help SMSU take back the lead by connecting on three 3-pointers and extending the lead to 59-48 with just under eight minutes to play. Winona State would battle back to a three-point deficit, but the effort would be too little, as SMSU would go on to win the game.
SMSU continues conference play on the road with a game against Augustana on Dec. 19, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
