WINONA, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team bounced back into the win column with a dominant 93-64 victory over the Winona State Warriors in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Saturday afternoon inside McCown Gymnasium.
SMSU (9-2, 3-2 NSIC) finished the day shooting 34 of 61 (56 percent) from the field including making a season-high 16 of 36 attempts from beyond the arc.
WSU, which drops to 6-5 on the year and 2-3 in conference play, closed the day shooting 38 percent (24 of 63) from the field including 25 percent (5 of 20) from downtown.
Five Mustangs scored in double figures in the win.
Bri Stoltzman poured in a game-high 27 points on 11 of 15 shooting with six assists and three rebounds.
Peyton Blandin followed up with 21 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while
Nicole Maenke rained in six 3-pointers to finish with 18 points. Maenke finished the game 6 for 6 from 3-point range setting a team single-game record for 3-point field goal pct.
Audrey Swanson poured in 12 points and nine rebounds, while
Natalie Nielsen secured her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
SMSU opened the game with a pair of 3-pointers to take an early 6-0 lead. The Warriors then combined two layups and a jumper to pursue a 7-2 run and cut the lead to one point with just over five minutes left in the first quarter.
Over the following three minutes,
Bri Stoltzman poured in seven consecutive points for SMSU to give the Mustangs a 17-13 lead with two minutes to go. The Warriors would hold SMSU to only one more basket to take a 20-19 lead after one quarter.
SMSU scored the first five points of the second quarter to gain momentum but the Warriors would not go away, pursuing an 11-4 run using four jumpers and a 3-pointer to lead 31-28 with four minutes to go in the half.
The Mustangs would flip the script and control the back half of the second quarter, combining 3-pointers from Maenke and Blandin with a pair of driving layups to close the half on a 13-4 run.
SMSU exploded offensively in the second half. The teams traded the first 12 points evenly until
Bri Stoltzman kicked off the offensive barrage with a pull-up jumper in the paint. The Mustangs shot 8 of 11 in the last seven minutes of the quarter to extend their lead to 16 points moving into the final frame.
The Mustangs made eight 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, with
Nicole Maenke making five of them herself.
SMSU is back in action with a split week next week, playing at Augustana on Thursday, Dec. 19, before welcoming Sioux Falls on Saturday, Dec. 21.
